gary oldman was miscast

I still think this is a great movie tho oldman ruins it with his over the top acting and fake acccent , I think Christopher walken woulda been a much better choice

You’re in the minority on this one (no question). But I kinda get where you’re coming from. Though I've come to better appreciate Oldman as Stansfield myself (his supposed improv moments are great), I always felt he should have been more subtle in this film. I get that his character is a loose cannon (he’s certainly supposed to make everyone around him uncomfortable), but if you ask me at times he was more unintentionally comical than threatening & serious as Stansfield. His accent is also a bit inconsistent and overall his acting feels all over the place that I dare say he comes off as a caricature of himself at times (he’s no stranger to giving some very over-the-top performances and chewing the scenery, of course).

Fighting words, I know, but… forget it. He’s a blast in this! XD No I still don’t think he’s 100% masterful like many find him to be in this, although he gives a performance that’s highly memorable alright. Hard to imagine the film without him.

I actually see odd similarities to Walken's character in Nick of Time. Kind of a tightly controlled, murdering psychosis going on between both characters .

reply

I think Oldman is great in this film, even though the accent does seem to slip a little - but Walken is a very interesting idea.

reply

Agree. Totally should have cast Nick Cage.😏

reply

I thought he was a net positive. Very good, if not perfect, performance. A lot of New Yorkers and other people with "accents" tend to have "mixed" accents, because the commonality and social mobility of accents is dynamic and changes over time. So in that sense, the accent really wasn't that horrible. Christopher Walken would have been a bit too old and not a good fit, IMHO.

reply

I agree. I though Oldman was excellent in the film. And he does over-the-top bad guys very well. That was practically all he did in the 90's, and every one of them was different. I like Walken, but I find him to be a bit the same in every film I've seen him in /maybe I'm watching the wrong movies/ and I also think as you, that he woudn't have been a good fit.

reply

I thought Oldman was terrific in the role. He is good at playing psychos and that is exactly what this bad guy was.

reply

I don't think Oldman's performance in Leon/The Professional is even close to being his best, but every film buff I know thinks it is. Stansfield is a widely loved villain, and those of us who don't adore him seem to be in the minority. That said, Oldman does deliver a few really good, quotable lines in the film.

reply

Thats true, that he does deliver really good lines.

Im actually surprised by this. Though I always liked oldman in this I never thought most people did. He's character is ruthless and really evil despites his crack sense of humor.

I always admired Oldman for this role and thought this was good acting and at his best. Ive seen him in many films throughout his career and have to come to despise as a bad actor. To me this is his only good role and the only one I like him in.

reply

I’m not a big fan of Oldman, but I do think he was perfectly cast to play Stansfield, besides his over the top acting is what makes the character so memorable. Stansfield was truly evil and Oldman portrayed that trait very well.

Are you trolling? Oldman is the definition of a great actor. Total chameleon and 100% committed to every role, from Dracula to Stansfield to George Smiley. Guy’s CV is legendary 🤷🏻‍♂️

reply

Gotta disagree. Oldman was perfect here.

I'm with texasjack on this...besides Matilda and Leon...He is the most memorable character in this film...I would even put him as a equal to them. His acting never felt over the top to me because I felt the character was supposed to be a crazy dirty cop on Speed.

Also I am not the biggest Gary Oldman fan...in fact I only learned that this was Gary Oldman tonight when i finally decided to look up the actor played him. And I have been a fan of this movie since it came out. The only movie i ever could recognize Gary from was The Dark Knight. So you can imagine my surprise when I just learned tonight that the Gordon from the Dark Knight is The bad guy from the professional. lol

reply

He also played Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. He definitely has some range.

reply

I figured he had some range when I saw he played Sid in Sid and Nancy..again not a sex pistols fan but I know of them. I will have to checkout the darkest hour. As I am a fan of WW2 era movies.

"Romeo Is Bleeding (1993)" is a good starring role for Oldman.

Noted MisterE. Thanks.
