Susanah´s biggest mistake was marring alfred

independent of Tristan going back or not, Susannah´s biggesit mistake was marrying alfred she felt nothing for him, sure she liked him as a friend but there was no attraction.

she fisrt loved Sammuel and then was very attracted to Tristan which she thought was love but it really was more lust.
could it have become love yes definitley if Tristan would have stayed and Alfred wouldnt have made him feel guilty with Sam´s death.

another thing is that she kind of knew Alfred wanted to be with her because he was in constant competition with Tristan.

for him Sussanah was a trophy.

maybe im baissed because i didnt like Alfred, but what do you guys think?

reply

I disagree that for him Susannah was a trophy. I believe that he genuinely loved her.
Maybe I'm biased because I DID like Alfred...

But I agree that she should'nt have married him, because she never loved him. He worshipped her and provided security, so she figured he could make her happy (if anything, he was her trophy rather than the other way around).
She may have been content for a little while (while Tristan was away) but marriages like theirs are never truly happy or satisfying.

I think there could have been good friends but i think his insistence over Susanah was because he was always the underdog of the family or he felt that so to win something he got stubborn with Susanah

Yes agree she was ok till Tristan came back but after so she was really Miserable, it's really sad the scene where they find each other and Tristan is with Isabel 2 and his kids and she is with Alfred because Tristan did find someone else he loved meanwhile Susanah was with Alfred just because she couldn't be with Tristan.

reply

Exactly! Alfred's intentions towards Sussanah are not honorable. He barely gave her time to grieve his brother before forcing himself on her quickly before Tristan returns. The passion between she and Tristan is palpable in their embrace even before they go to war, so Alfred knew what he was doing. I couldn't stand how jealous he was of his own brother. But it probably was his parent's fault. Their mother loved Samuel the most and the Colonel loved Tristan best. Alfred was on his own.

reply

So agree with you and I'd add that when Alfred fisrt saw that embrace and got angry wasn't really because of defending Samuel it was gealousy that if someone else had a chance with Susanah was Tristan.

He always blamed Tritsan for being attracted to his brother's fiancé but it wasn't becasue he wanted to defend Samuel it's because Tristan won again and had someone else's attention.

I hate to spoil your fantasy world but many people get married not for love, and a marriage needs more than love only to sustain.

Show me the holes!

reply

No, the mistake was Alfred's. He should have found another woman while she was having her way with the other brothers. I can't believe he didn't find someone in the city. Another may have loved him more.

reply

I think Susannah's biggest mistake was not leaving after Samuel's death.

reply

She was very disrespectful of Samuel, he died trying to prove his love. I also think it caught up to her in the end when she cuts her hair military style and kills herself and joins him in death.

reply

Could not agree more. She should have left and continued her life elsewhere. By staying she perpetuates the tragic fraternal rivalry. And then she locks herself into a one-sided and childless marriage. She should have left and started a new life somewhere else. But it's a movie, so whatever! 

reply

Actually, I think her biggest mistake was bouncing around from one brother to the next. She went through those Ludlow men like they were chocolates or especially tasty breakfast pastries. I'm surprised she didn't go after their father.
