the bear

Was anyone else sad when the bear had his toe cut off? I only caught the first half of the movie, but it seemed to me that Tristan provoked him by bothering him then got pissed when the bear was angry. From what I recall, it may have been a tradition that he had to follow...or something...? But either way seemed a waste to hurt a bear like that. Maybe someone else can better explain it to me.

Mrs. Lovett you're a bloody wonder!

It was a matter of testing himself, his masculinity, his connection with nature.. all these things he ran to without thought and acted somewhat a fool. It was an important seen in showing his nature, his recklessness and lack of care for his well being and his affinity for danger IMO.

i will need to see the entire movie to understand the themes. the one scene i happened to catch was the narrator explaining that Tristan never saw his mom again, and then the scene with the bear. Made my heart hurt a little when the bear limped away...and everyone else is worried about Tristan (who did have a nasty gash in his arm) but I figure he deserved it......you're explanation helped though. When I am able, I will watch the whole thing.

it helps to keep in the back of my mind, the bear was not truly hurt..he was trained to limp ...and then the bears trainer was probably standing in for Tristan...yeah ok, I am looking to far into it. thanks for your input though!

Sorry for the bear? Nope.
Tristan did what he did to prove to himself (and remember he was still maturing) he was a man and had courage. If he had only known it, even at his age, he had nothing to prove, as it was mostly inherent in him, the rest picked up along the way, the road of Life.

That scene reveals Tristan to be the screwed-up, self-involved idiot that he really is. He deserved his fate. I just wish it had come sooner and saved everyone a lot of trouble.

Yes I was sorry for the bear - humans are selfish
