"The policeman who shot off his gun..."

When Tristan is being told he will have to go to jail, he asks about the policeman who "shot off his gun", assuming he's referring to the one whose bullet killed Isabel. Alfred tells him "Nothing".

Question: I realize this is a movie, but how can Alfred let this happen, his brother goes to jail for 'almost' killing a man, and that (?) man is not punished *at all* for, however unintentionally, killing Tristan's wife?

reply

The policeman was "reprimanded". "Nothing" was the response to Tristan asking about the O'Banions.

reply

Tristan served 30 days for intentionally attacking a police officer. The policeman's actions were deemed an accident. She was killed by a ricochet.

reply

I don't think it was a ricochet. I believe it was intentional, the payback for tristan killing his brother. They don't act surprised or worried when tristan realizes isabel is hurt. Otherwise, what was the point of shooting their guns to the air? I think they wanted it to look like an accident, but one of them really aimed at isabel.

It was a ricochet. It wasn't intentional. Not that it makes a difference. There was no payback, since Tristan hadn't yet killed the brother. The brother was killed in revenge for this very scenario.

reply

It was a ricochet but under the circumstances it was also manslaughter. He should have been jailed for many years.

reply

Probably because she was an Indian. Back then Indians were not treated equally, so it makes sense that he wouldn't go to jail for killing her. 💧

reply

Excellent point. I actually forgot about that...it would explain why they would let him off easier.
