the Classics Illustrated version

Has anyone else read the Classics Illustrated version of this story? I was very impressed by it in my teens (approximately). I have not read the full novel, but the CI versions of the classics were always extremely true to the originals, simply abbreviated.

By the way, the CI "War of the Worlds" was really great. I've always wanted to see a movie version that used the images from that. Awesome.

I own a copy. The funny thing is, the artist drew the Creature as looking more like the Universal version than as described in the book.

And yes, WOTW ROCKED!!!

reply

I didn't know that, but I'm not surprised.

Yeah, I'm still waiting for a good WOTW movie.

Hi, I have this version, a very good version it is to. Are you after a copy?

reply

I have a Illustrated Classics version of the book but I am not sure if it is the same as yours. On the cover it shows the 1931 monster. I shows a monster with a flat head with a castle behind him. In the illustrations in the book he looks more like the original monster.

reply

I have that same one, tigurking. I actually became familiar with that novel's illustrations more so than the Universal film's images. I'm glad about that, when I think about the monster, I usual see stuff like in those illustrations... excellent stuff. That book made me pick up the full thing. Been a fan ever since.

I also own a copy. There exists two editions of Great Illustrated Classics - small 5" x 5" paperbacks (which look better than the latter) and the recent hardbacks (the same edition also available in 10" paperback) with cover art that doesn't corroborate with the rest of the illustrations.

I tried so many times to like the original novel but i found it so boring! sure its a classic but i feel that the idea behind it is much better then the actual novel.

Get the edition illustrated by Berni Wrightson, you'll be blown away by the best 40 or something drawings ever to illustrate Frankenstein.

reply

The out-of-print version by Dalmatian Press is another good one, with accurate drawings. It's actually the version that inspired me to read the actual novel, as I had no idea the monster was supposed to look that way.

And I second the recommendation for the Bernie Wrightson illustrated edition. Dark Horse is rereleasing it in hardcover just in time for Halloween.

I had the Classics Illustrated version of Frankenstein when I was a kid and was quite surprised at how gruesome some of the illustrations were for a comic aimed at young people. The illustration of the hanging of Justine was a large panel showing her with her neck twisted around, without a hood over her head. The murder of William and Frankenstein's wife were also pretty graphic. The monster in the version I had looked similar to the Boris Karloff version, and had gray skin.

The Classics Illustrated version of War of the Worlds was terrific.
