I loved this film nearly as much as Dracula ('92)

When I was younger I had seen the 30's Wolfman and Frankenstein and thought they were pretty good. Then these films came out and I fell over myself. I used to take a lot of sick days off school just to stay home and watch movies. This and Dracula being on high rotation. I think these films are great. They have ambitious production designs and effects. Dracula especially. I personally am drawn to their aesthetics. I can't get enough of that look.

I don't see this film as flawed at all. When I first saw it I thought it was intense and it's blasé attitude towards gore and sexuality made me uncomfortable in some scenes. It was more mature than I was. It did manage to scare me and give me a few nightmares. A film that stays with me like that can't be considered a failure in my mind.

Me too! I saw both films as a kid and fell in love with them. I've seen them so many times since then. And I agree, they are beautiful aesthetically, especially Dracula. Another film I was obsessed with that came out at the same time was Stargate! Once, my neighbors were calling me to play outside around 6pm, they needed 1 more player to even out the teams but I refused to go out because they were showing Stargate on cable. I made many enemies that day, lol!

I saw this with the knowledge of how poorly it did as a film. Prepared, I still sat through it with curiosity and...I agree with you.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Both films are brilliant.

Seems like somebody failed to grow as an objective cinephile.
Considering the context of my post, I think it's clear I was talking subjectively and meaning a failure by my own standards, not commercial.

I like this version, too. It is good Gothic monster film, with beautiful production values. And Helena Bonham-Carter looks great in those lavish dresses!

I find this movie mildly enjoyable. It's so over-wrought (especially the music which is like something from the 40's) but what the hey.

Now Dracula is another story. I have the most mixed feelings about Dracula as I have ever experienced in a movie. It -should- be an absolute masterpiece. But it is absolutely polluted by Keanu Reeves presence. It's like a Rolls Royce that some idiot added spinner rims and ground effects.
