Movie VS Book
I have not read the book but I have heard that the movie and book are quite different. I was wondering if anyone who has seen the movie and read the book can list the differences between them.

the book was nothing about comedy, it was a serious book. i was shocked to see
comedy, and i dont think it followed close loyalty to the book.:/
Come to the world where the flavor is.
the book is fabulous. i highly recommend reading it. it has so much emotion and passion and not because of the sex but because of the human feelings in it. i cannot believe ann rice said yes to the script of the movie. i don't hate the movie, if it's on and there is nothing else to watch, it's fine. however if the movie had been true to the book it probably would have been classified as an adult movie (but actually one with a point!)
marriage is a great institution, but i'm not ready for an institution yet. mae west

Once a writer sells his or her work to Hollywood, they have almost no say in what Hollywood does with it. Ms. Rice denounced the finished film project.
Check out Clive Clusser and what Hollywood has done to his great books.
I loved the book too- it was published as soft porn but was much more than that- though the S&M action was great too. For me it was the occasional bit where women were being dominated that really did it, (especially Lisa's time as a sub) but that's just my thing. So - can anyone tell me how much (if any) female subbing made it into the movie? I'm expecting it was none or virtually none- to most viewers, watching men being dominated is funny, women it's shocking/obscene- for various reasons, often perfectly valid eg most sexual violence (which I am TOTALLY against- just thought I should make that clear) coming from men.

I have seen the movie and read the book and while I could probably list the differences between them, I don't think there's enough bandwidth. The best way to view these two works is as two completely unrelated things which happen to share a title and the names of a couple of characters.
I really enjoyed the book, and I even enjoyed the movie- but they are not the same thing at all.
Paul Mercurio is a talented actor who I enjoyed in 'Strictly Ballroom', but he is totally miscast as Elliot- if you are going by the book....which this movie didn't.....
Dana Delaney was enjoyable in this movie and could have made a very good Lisa- if they were actually filming the book.....which they didn't....
I think that the thing which annoyed me the most was the arrival/presentation/auction scene where Elliot is in that stupid gold diaper.....way to try to desexualize a scene based on exploitation of sexuality.....which would work against the theme of the book.....if the movie had anything to do with the book....which it doesn't......
Anyway, maybe some time in the future when people get less weird about expressing their sexuality this book can actually be made into a movie....but this movie isn't it.
I have read the book, and I still cant believe that they have made it into a comedy- OH.... MY....GOD..... was my first reaction to when I looked the movie up. The weirdest thing is: I actually saw a little of the movie on late, LATE/early, EARLY morning TV once, before I had even picked up the book. I saw the part when Elliot (Mecurio's character) was on the ship, and some of when he first came to the island. This was so long ago, I think I'd just started high school, so its all a little fuzzy.
THEN when I ipicked up the book, about a year ago, I was thinking "hmmm, this sounds familiar".... but then got caught up in the book.
Now, that I rediscover the movie, I have to agree with penhalion: there can be NO LINKS between the movie except for kinky island concept, and Elliot and Lisa characters. Other than that.... well, i'm thinking you get the picture if you've read the previous postings.
Its like having an epiphany... but not a very nice one. I really enjoyed the book, and I would recommend it as a good read.... possibly not to my Mum and Dad, but the rest of you with open mind. The movie tho, is up to your discretion, i suppose, lol
oh my god! oh my god!
of all authors in the world, anne rice had to be the one who had to have a serious book made into a comedy.
blasphemy!
how could a woman with such respectable credentials have something so horrible like this happen to her? a woman who has made a career out of writing about superstitious and mythical cult creatures has to face the embarrassment of having one of her less mythical and more pornographic novels made into a comedy on the big screen!
i am truly offended that something like this could happen to such an imaginative, creative, accomplished author.
oh... oh wait... i have to find a toilet so i can *beep* some more out of my mouth.
Blame Gary Marshal - he'd the damn fool that rewrote the screenplay. That's what you get for letting a television director head a film like this.
shareSomeone for the love of God puts things right! This movie is not at all like the book, which I love. Why was it made into a comedy? Grr.
shareThe book was awesome. Very intense and very naughty. If they made the book directly into a film, it would be rated XXX I think. But most of it feels like a Garry Marshall flick with the goofball quips, same actors you see in all his films, and other bad acting. which makes me wonder, where the hell does he get his extras and bit players? they suck.
shareAt least it gets bushy in the movie at the pool scene. Dana Delaney is absolutely sexy and hornifying, I got wood.
I think having a person like Rosie Odonelle and Dan Akroyd was a big mistake and not needed. I found them rather annoying. Blame them for the comedy and stupidness if anybody. To those who thought the movie should be like the book.
The movie wouldn't have to be rated XXX. The movie "Eyes Wide Shut" springs immediately to mind as an example of how this material can be handled without going into triple X teritory.
sharewhere can i find this book?
i like to read different stuff and this sounds interesting but i don't know if i could find it.

I extremely enjoyed the book. The movie, “meh” is the word that most closely resembles my feeling about it.
The only similarities are a couple names, some BDSM, and an island. And even then, it’s only loosely based on the book.
If you enjoyed this book and haven’t read her Sleeping Beauty series, then I highly recommend those as well. Similar subject matter but in a fantasy setting. Something to keep in mind, if you are homophobic in the slightest you may not like them. Almost all the men in the books are bi.
Wow, I'm the first one that's going to turn the tables here. I saw the movie first, and thought it was wonderful. Then I read everyone's comments here about the book and thought it sounded great, so I put it on my Amazon wish list and got it for Christmas.
I am halfway through the book and I am forcing myself. It is pure, unadulterated smut that makes Jackie Collins or Harold Robbins look like Mary Poppins. While some of you hornier folks would run to buy it just by that description, I also have to add that it's boring as hell. Anne (Rice) Rampling must be sexually deprived or something because the descriptions of sex she comes up with should make this book burn itself to ashes. At least the movie has a side story, even if they DO use Dan Aykroyd and Rosie O'Donnell. It was something to get your mind off of this tripe. If the movie had been made directly from the book, it would have been in the darkest part of the "Adults Only" curtained-off section with a ton of chains and locks over it, and it makes me sick to think of the perverts who would have rented it. Gaaah.
Overall, great movie and nauseating literature. Get the movie instead.

I do have to say that parts of the book did make me blush, but it was still better than the movie. I think that my reasoning is because I had read the book, so when I watched the movie, I was expecting... you know... the book. Had I not read the book before seeing the film, I'm fairly certain that I would have enjoyed it thoroughly.

shareI couldn't agree more. The book runs circles around the movie. The whole diamond smuggling plotline was just crap. Most likely Gary Marshall's way of keeping it from earning an XXX rating.
As to how Anne could have signed off her approval on the screenplay, I haven't a clue. Apparently she learned her lesson, with how *decently* close "Interview with the Vampire" followed the book. (Won't go into "Queen of the Damned", as that one was just rushed, and tried to condense the major plot points of both the titled book, and "The Vampire Lestat." Had they taken the time to make both of them separately...)but I'm getting off track.
The casting, while not ideal, was admirable. I've always enjoyed Dana Delaney, and even more so after this movie. It's just proof of her ability to assume as many diverse roles as there is. (Sorry, but in my fantasies, she'll always be Colleen McMurphy!! CHINA BEACH RULZ!!!) Hector Elizondo is as awesome as always. I wasn't all that crazy about the casting for Elliot. Just didn't fit the image in the book. Rosie and Dan, sorry guys, but no.
If you're into Anne Rice's work, and not turned off by the idea of erotic literature, then you should definitely check out the book.
I too have seen both the movie and read the book.. and i concur that the book is by far better. The book is a thoughtful love story while the movie is just plain ridiculous. Plus the casting was totally wrong. I thought Elliot was supposed to be blond? And Dana wasn't the most alluring.... And then there's Rosie and Dan; Wow! The Storyline was stretched thin to say the least. I think if the book was converted in film truer than this it's possible for it to be tasteful and entertaining. Too Bad it wasn't.
shareLord help us if you read the Sleeping Beauty books then
shareFinally, someone who agrees. Compared to Anne's Beauty Series, Exit to Eden was NOTHING. EtE would have been a nice book to read before entering a series based soley on sexual submission and dominance, since it lets you understand more of the reasoning behind these actions. For someone like me who started out with the more erotic series first, . . . well, neededless to say I was bored to tears. I believe this was one of the only times where I preferred a movie over the literature it was based on. However, I was a trifle bit put off that they attempted to eliminate all homosexual overtones from the movie to make it so more people will watch it. You make a movie about experiencing sexual fantasy and taboo, yet try and make it 'friendly?' Please.
share"Overall, great movie and nauseating literature. Get the movie instead."
Oh, go back to watching reruns of "Happy Days." "Exit to Eden" was written for adults, not little kiddies.
There's definitely a difference between the two. I saw the movie first, and found it to be amusing. When I read the book, I was shocked at how little they had in common. (I remember hearing later that the movie wasn't changed to a comedy until after filming was complete, and that some of the actors had to be brought back to reshoot some of the scenes.) As far as one being better than the other...I don't know how you can compare them. They aren't really even the same genre. Basically, if you want to enjoy a light romantic comedy with a B&D twist, check out the movie. If you want a serious novelization dealing with some of the psychological aspects of the BDSM scene, check out the book.
shareI agree totally with the above poster....the book and movie are night and day. The scene in the book where...ahem! she takes him is changed to a spanking in the movie lol.
anyway the book is almost philosphical compared to the light humor of the movie. It's almost sad.... the book was so much material and potential for a serious in depth movie I was disappointed anne rice approved the movie.
The book was so intense and beautiful it angered me that its potential was squandered in such a movie. I guess anne rice thought it was the only way it would ever see the light of day on film.
I can always hope they do a remake but it the book is HEAVY in sexual content.
To all of you trying to connect the movie to the book...GET A LIFE!!! It is widely known that many movies are made every year where the premise is loosely related to a certain book in some cases even several books. But come on people get real. I would imagine that Gerry Marshall has read the book and one day got the idea (or was given the idea) to make a comedy movie at least using the idea of a "fantasy sex Island" for the setting. Rosie O'donnell in not somebody I would have cast but I can see why he did cast her. She is fat, unatractive and can be kind of funny. The thought that any man would even want to mount that horse in mid-boggling. Dan Akroyd always makes a great on screen comedy cop and I love his fish out of water attitude while on the island. "Big boy,eh?" Dana Delaney has one of the most beautiful bodies and most luscious faces in all of Hollywierd and the greatest butt and tits of them all. I cannot believe that she has said this was not a role she was very proud of. she could be my mistress anyday. The scene where Lisa is rubbing her breats up and down Elliot's back and then spanking him. I fully expected to see a drop of semen hit the carpet. Also it is too bad they could not have thrown in a girl on girl scene with Lisa and her little secretary, pupil, whatever she was. Also I would have loved to see more of the girl who played Reba, those breasts are huge. It was a great, funny movie destined for cult classic status. By the way my wife and I have tried the butter, cinnamon on the nipple thing and that is one great breakfast.
shareI really like Anne Rice alot, but "Exit to Eden" isn't one of my favorites. Of her erotca, I think the Sleeping Beauty series is the top of her game.
That said, this movie managed to stink on its own merits. It was like two different movies edited together using the same sets. On the one hand, you have the sexy, romantic story of Lisa and Elliot; then there's the cop comedy with Dan Aykroyd. Cutting back and forth between the two just spoils the mood for both.
