I believe the song is by Enigma--probably off the album entitled MCMXC A.D. --I am tempted to say the song title is "Sadeness" but I haven't heard it in over 10 years, so I can't recall which song is which anymore.

To alanrimes's credit, both songs are in the film but are played at different points (Return to Innocence as Mercurio's character heads toward the boat, the other during the scene described in the opening post).
