Who is Nicholas?!

Who is he supposed to be in relation to Mary's family? I don't think we are ever told. Why he had Mary's husband kipnapped, why he felt entitled to all that money, etc. Was he head of their security as a wealthy family, if so why would a member of security make a speech at the Owl preservation dinner & be all friendly with the mom. I've seen this movie a zillion times and it never occurred to be, who the *beep* is this guy!? Anyone know??

Never mentioned!.... However he knows how wealthy the family are! so thinks ill ransom the hubby for money! Fair shout?:)

You’re right. He must have been their Kato...

Additionally, the whole way the family reacted to the kidnapping was very odd. Why was the mother-in-law (Terri Garr) so flippant about the fact her son was kidnapped... she was more interested in seeing Mary go on a date (?!). And Mary’s reaction to the fact the they brought back the suitcase? Sure... She was shocked and surprised, but wouldn’t she be more concern that the whole ransom-for-husband was aborted?

Ahah....I guess it was all part of the comic delivery.

Terri Garr is actually playing Mary's step-mom, not her mother-in-law. And yeah, Mary's parents' plan is to act normal, pretend nothing's wrong, so that they don't draw any attention with the media or the authorities and thus throw off the kidnappers' plans. As Nicolas Andre says, "You never know what they might do to him then."

Also, I can't remember if it says specifically, but I've always assumed that he's just been a friend of the family and working in the family business or whatever for decades or something. He probably just feels entitled to this fortune that he's helped them make, and he probably thinks that they don't value him enough or something.
