Only watch the 120 minute cut!

I have the Japanese widescreen laserdisc (and soon the anamorphically enhanced German dvd) of the film which clocks in at 120 minutes. Talk about a world of difference! As far as I am concerned, the 99 minute cut is crap; editing is choppy and the story is a little too straight-forward without anything else to build on it (the pan and scan doesn't help at all either).

The "director's cut" (being that apparently Stevie doesn't like the 120 minute version) is a much better experience; not only is it the proper 2.35:1 letterbox, but there is more character development, more development of the Hard Man project, but more importantly more development of the Elle Pouget character (her and the Death Machine have something in common that is pretty creepy and disgusting). It also helps that a lot of the action and special effect shots can now be enjoyed and appreciated as we can now see what the hell is going on. Editing is also smoother, with the addition of more violence and scene extensions (Scott's run from the DM's intro is twice as long, with a really cool EVIL DEAD style tracking shot as he is running through multiple corridors before getting trapped in the conference room).

Regardless, hunt down the 120 minute version and watch it for yourself. Just ignore the bastardized 99 minute cut.

the version we uk fans have is 111 mins long, is that the same or is there a third one?!!? the one i have doesnt specify "directors cut" but its the same one i had on video before replacing it. if you name a few bits that were in this 120min version but not the shorter one i'll know if its in the one i have and if as a result its the right one.

can you imagine your life without dreamcast?...........didnt think so!

What sort of extra material is in the 120 min cut? I ask this because I've only seen the thearatical version in Singapore. Ely Pouget rocks!

I've got the U.K cut and love the film and although its only a couple of minutes what is exactley in those few mins.

Since Norrington has stated he prefers the U.K cut these scenes cant of been much use to the film, or am i wrong?????

I'm from Belgium and this movie was released on VHS here once upon a time with an approx running time of 120mins (1.85, not 2.35). I loved it to death, so I got some scenes memorized, and when I got the UK DVD, I did notice some minor changes here and there...

For example:
-when Raimi enters the truck and shows his team the joints, in the UK cut it goes straight from him entering the truck to him showing Weyland the oversized joint. In the version I have on VHS, Yutani first asks him "Where have you been?" to which Raimi answers "I've been getting provisions..." and then shows Weyland the joint...

-When Carpenter is explaining the Hardman project "just doesn't work", he keeps getting interrupted by Ridley saying "John" over and over. In the UK cut that scene ends with Carpenter getting angry and shouting "WHAT? WHAT?". In the VHS version I had, Ridley adds an hilarious delivery of "Shut the *beep* up!" after that. You can see the cut is a bit iffy on the DVD when they cut straight to the face of another exec. There's just a bit some sound remaining from another shot...

I also have a question: in DVD Profiler, it lists the German version as only having a German audio track. Is there anyone here that can confirm that? I was thinking of maybe picking it up, but if it indeed only has a German dub, they can shove that right back up their unrespectful err... assets...

Yeah it only has one audio track (German), I checked various sources.

This is from the UK R2 version:
Okay, what it comes down to is that at some point in the past she had a baby. When she was washing it in the sink, somehow it's arm got chewed off by the garbage disposal because she stepped away for a moment. Then she dropped it. The dialogue was kind of blown out, so I couldn't really tell anything else. Kind of unsure what happened to the child, but from other scenes I'll assume it died. There is also a scene extention that tells of her being dis-owned by her family, but I couldn't really tell if that was from the tragity with her baby, or her youthful mistake of geting published in a porn magazine.

Hope that helps (and doesn't ruin your experience when you see the longer cut).

I'm also interested in if there is a difference between the Japanese LD vs. German versions, and whether the German version is different than the UK version. The UK version was worth every penny, and was a much better film because of the content.

don't watch the cut version.

i seen the movie on a film festival many years ago and loved it,
but had trouble recognizing it on public tv/dvd.
for example they cut out the complete first scene with 10 minutes.

as far as anyone is still interested in ths information! the german dvd version and the japanese version are exactly the same, except the language track, one only german, one english! if you have the 111 min uk cut, stick with that one, the opening is a little different in the editing, but it only helps the pacing and it gets you better in the mood of the film, then the japan/german longer cut! nothing is missing, all the gore is intact, the subplot is in there as well!
the only thing that sucks is that there is no special edition of the film out, like digital remastered sound and picture, bonus material, like commentary track, deleted scenes, making of! that would be cool, since this is a very good movie!

also take note that this dvd claims it does not have an english track

I have dealt with DTM a number of times and alwaysh had fast shipping and good communication (I am in the US). If you go to the sites mainpage on the top right you will see an english flag icon. CLicking that gives the site in Englsih for you

Also take note this dvd says by special order. THESE DO COME THROUGH. I have ordered quite a few items from them in the past that had the special order and though it may take close to a month , the items did come in--

99% of you people send me PM's with questions and never bother to check that I replied to them.

While it is a shame that the German DVD only has a German DD 5.1 audio track, I can add that there is a tracker (cinemageddon.net) that has a version using the German DVD video and a muxed English audio track from the rare Japanese laserdisc.

Regardless, I also have the UK dvd and I felt the editing was very choppy (especially the beginning scene at the destroyed bar and grill). Until someone decides to put it out on blu-ray, this is about as good as it gets.

I was so happy to find the DVD in my local Buybacks store the other day after having watched it on YouTube, only to find out it's the 99 minute version! @#$)(*& Oh well, at least I can still watch it if it's deleted off of YouTube. I don't even *want* to watch the edited version now.
