These Filmmakers Know NOTHING About Hockey!

At one point in the movie a character mentions the score of the game, and uses the word "points." Sorry, guy--anyone who has been to even ONE game knows you keep track of the score in goals. And what about the gimmick (featured in the commercials) of the puck flipping end-over-end to knock out the goalie. Pu-lease! A puck flipping like that is like a knuckleball: it doesn't fly straight, it dips unpredictably, and it comes in more slowly than usual, and certainly with less force than a regular shot. Again, anyone who's actually SEEN a puck flip would know better.

ya plus in the shoot out part where the iceland guy takes a shot and the goalie catches it everyone is waiting for her to show the puck to see if it is a goal or not but its obvious if it is not in the net then there is no goal no matter where the puck is just as long as they didnt see it in the net

My problem with the movie was not so much all the gimmich plays but how they decided to change the rules of the game. Half stuf did by all the team were penalties. I did enjoy this movie as kid and it did it's job for a kids a movie and that was to entertain but now that i am older i perfer to watch hockey movies like Mystry Alaska, Miracle and Youngblood

im almost offended by the lack of mention of slap shot in your list of "real" hockey movies.

I as well. : (

Are you daring to suggest the Knuckle-puck doesn't really exist!?

reply

Actually, it does exist, it just doesn't work like that. At all.

reply

not to mention the fact that the ducks team made up team usa just because the won a state title no matter how far they had come

reply

The Reason the Ducks made up most of the team was because Bombay was coaching it. If I recall correctly, he said he would coach team USA if he was allowed to pick the players.

I understand this is a kids movie, but it gives an awful impression to kids about the wonderful sport of hockey. I mean, far too many serious penalties (the slash on Bank' wrist) were serious intent to injure and would mean ejection from the tournament. Also, how do hockey powers Finland,Sweeden and the Czech Republic go unmentioned and super powers like Russia and the obvious choice, Canada get just passing mention?

reply

They beat Russia in the Semifinals, but yeah...i was thinking that too about Sweden, Finland, Czech Rep., and Canada. C'mon....Trinidad and Tobago?

Not only is it a kids movie, It's a comedy as well and in COMEDY. especially a kids one, You are not going to see a 100% accurate representation of whatever the movie is about because guess what? It's suppose to be funny. You want a serious Hockey movie? There are plenty of them out there but don't bash this movie because it's not accurate to a real life hockey team.

However Gordon Bombay's national selections were crap. Making most of Team USA from the Ducks? What about the better-skilled players who missed out on selection just because Bombay only wanted to coach his friends? Sure, communication among the team is important. However a team without exceptionally-talented players will not win a tournament, regardless of how well the communication is.

reply

In the real world, sure. But you're forgetting that the movie is a Mighty Ducks movie, not a "Maybe one or two players from the first movie and everyone else is replaced by new characters." movie.

Points in hockey mean 2 things. The number of standing points a team has and the number of scoring points (goals and assists) an individual player has.

"Alexei... YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! HISTORY!" - Hawk Harrelson's call of Buehrle's perfect game.

Me and my brothers loved this movie when we were kids. And I remember how we caused quite the s*itstorm when our dad said this movie is stupid as hell, because we took this film very seriously and kids usually don't know s*it.
Now, almost twenty years later, I decided to watch it again and I gotta say that our dad was right... this film is just plain stupid. Flying V - seriously? What were they THINKING?

reply

just look at how many thing were wrong with the tying goal when the knuckle puck kid scores with no time left
-they apparently put goal equipment on him during a 30 second time out with nobody noticing
-they end up using their 2 regular goalies in the shootout (one would have to be scratched for a 3rd do be used)
-Russ takes off his helmet. The play is supposed to stop immediately when they goalie loses his helmet and it is a penalty if he does it intentionally.
-Russ skates over the red line before shooting. Goalies can not participate in the play over centre
-there is a duck player over the blue line meaning it is offside. While we are on that subject EVERY time they do the flying V in the trilogy it is offside
-the puck goes in with no time left. There'd be a conference and likely a protest from the other team in any such case.
