Things that make Bombay a bad coach...

First of all I love D1 and D2. Was not a fan of D3. I realize Bombay took a bunch of terrible hockey players and turned them into world champions but the other day when I was watching this I started thinking about all the things Bombay has done/didn't do that kind of makes him a crappy coach. I know its just a movie but just for fun lets talk about some things that make Bombay a bad coach. Here are some things I came up with.

From D1-
1. Got an OWI. Not good if you are trying to be a role model for these kids. I know this is what ultimately got him into coaching with community service or whatever but still not sure if I would want my kid to play for someone who just got an OWI.

2. Drives out on the ice. Whether or not he "grew up on the ice" or not does not mean he should drive a limo full of kids on the ice. I was not a big fan of Charlie's mom (she was kind of a b) but she had every right to freak out on Gordon.

3. Teaching the kids to take falls. No need to explain much here. Felt bad especially for Jessie's dad who gave up his overtime hours or whatever it was to see his kids take falls.

From D2
1. Not playing Julie the Cat. This really bothered me. Yes I know he put her in originally against Iceland when they were getting killed but still, there were plenty of opportunities where she should of played. Even when you are up 9-1 late in the game or whatever it was against Trinidad and Tobago you don't play your backup goalie that left her team in Maine to show the world what she could do? Even if Goldberg was on a hot streak like Bombay claimed it was pretty obvious that Julie was probably more talented than Goldberg was anyway. She played for one play in a shootout in the last game. Come on this was complete bull crap.

2. Gordon's mind was elsewhere. Come on you are coaching team USA. Your #1 focus should be your team winning the gold medal! If you win, the fame stuff will take care of itself. Going to photo shoots and having parties at your condo when you should be out scouting your competition, breaking down film, and trying to keep your team focused. The photo shoot party is a big reason why they got spanked by Iceland. Bombay did not have his team ready to play. It should not take a 12-1 beat down for a team USA coach to realize "Hey I should probably start coaching these kids huh?"

3. Captain Blood. Making the kids do a bunch of sprints after a game where you just lost 12-1 and keeping them up all night is not going to help. In reality it was mainly Gordon's fault for not having them ready the first time against Iceland.

4. Changing uniforms. Really? I know the movie is called Mighty Ducks. But this is what ultimately ruined the 3rd movie for me. I know Charlie was being a little girl about this in D2 and D3. Not sure about you guys, but I would much rather represent my country and wear the red, white, and blue then represent my pee wee team. Its one thing to have one of your favorite players bitch about it but Bombay should of not allowed it. You are there to represent your country not your pee wee team.

5. Showing up late to the Germany game. Yeah he probably should of been fired for this but oh well. Showing up blowing that stupid duck whistle makes up for it I guess? (rolls eyes)

6. Lack of supervision. I know Bombay is a coach not a babysitter. Maybe this is Ms. Mackay's job? The main one that of bothered me is when they go play a game of street hockey in Compton the day of a game. Where is the supervision on this? What if they would of gotten hurt in this little scrimmage? Or shot? Or got in a fight? A day of a game you should not be out playing street hockey in Compton you should be resting! I know the players should of known better too but where was Bombay during all of this?

7. Practice methods in both movies. Now, I do not know a whole lot about coaching hockey so I am not sure if these are questionable coaching methods or not. In D1 they played catch with a football and passed to each other with eggs. In D2, having a honkytonk dance and rodeo was a little odd. Also their last practice/the day before the championship game vs. Iceland game you probably shouldn't be kicking a beach ball around the ice. Yes I know its ok to have a little fun every now and then with your players but I do not blame Coach Wolf for kicking them off the ice.

8. The worst one of them all: Eating Ice cream with the enemy. ;-)

He GAVE Julie the chance to play during the first Iceland game. She blew it by picking a fight with some of the Iceland players and getting thrown out of the game.

As for the Germany game, the novelization of the movie had some deleted scenes. One of which was where Marria from Iceland offers him a ride to go look for the team. Because they were off playing with Russ and his boys, he didn't know where they were. Marria deliberately got him lost so that he would be a no-show, but he was able to get there in the end.

She didn't blow anything, Gunnar and Sanderson were harassing her, one-sided referee kicked her out. That ref was a complete douche. I could be wrong but I think he was the coach of the Varsity on D3, sure looks like him.
