The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival kicks off Thursday night with Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron, though the sales portion of the fest started with a bang with Lionsgate landing The Crow reboot.
Lionsgate plunked down a reported eight-figure sum for the domestic distribution rights to the reboot, according to Deadline.
Bill Skarsgard - who stars with Nicolas Cage in a Lord of War sequel - portrays musician Eric Draven, a role originated by the late Brandon Lee, who was tragically killed on the set of the 1994 original adaptation of The Crow.
The reboot also stars FKA Twigs as Draven's fiancee Shelly, with Danny Huston also starring in an unknown role.
The deal was finalized on late Wednesday night as the TIFF sales market gets started, with a 2024 release date planned.
