Why is everyone so against a remake?

Is there any reason why it couldn't work in this day and age?
Surely it's the mark of a good story to be retold and reinterpreted by different people?

I wouldn't mind a remake if it were more in line with the comic book and actually scratched the dark emotional depths of madness and loneliness the original source material explored.

Less hollow comic book plot and elements and more emphasis on a long stare into the abyss a la Nietzsche would be a marked improvement over the original.

I would also dig it if it were shot mainly in black and white in the same vein as Sin City.

Scrap_iron, the source material for the crow is entirely in black and white so I do see where you're coming from, and I've always thought sin city was kinda like a tribute to the crow because of its setting and the film itself being really dark, gritty, and serious

reply

The main reason is.... many hold this one close to their hearts and they don't want a remake to tarnish its reputation. But of course, there's been enough bad Crow movies already, so a big screen adaption (no low budget stuff) that stays true to the source material should be welcomed. A TV series is more likely to happen these days though.

You want something corny? You got it!

reply

Not that they couldn't just try another, but there was a already a TV series back in 1998/99, which wasn't all that great. It only ran for one season and starred Marc Dacascos.

I think some fans don't want to see a remake because no other actor could do Brandon justice. Not just because of his acting ability but because he died during the film. Many fans want the film to be left alone as a tribute to Brandon. Not to mention, the other Crow sequels have been pretty terrible, so they don't want the original messed with.

reply

honestly i think the circumstances of lees death surrounding this film make it feel like... i dunno, like its his film, and anyone else is a pretender. I know that the role and the film doesnt BELONG to him, im just saying i think thats what it feels like - for a lot of people there is a lot of emotion surrounding the film...

also i think theres no reason a DIFFERENT crow movie cant be done, with a new character - it doesnt have to be a retelling of THIS specific character and scenario.

I think you might be onto something there, klauke, at least in part of the reason.

I too get the impression that, for a lot of us fans of the movie, there is also a feeling that because Brandon died making the thing, there's almost a sense of feeling like it's disrespectful to get someone to "replace" him as Eric Draven.

I agree with you that it's not like anyone's saying it belonged exclusively to Brandon so hands off forever. But just that, as you say, there is a bit of a feeling of "leave it be".

Of course, the sequels did present a different Crow movies with new Crow leads, starting with Vincent Perez as a Crow guy named Ash. But I didn't think they were very good.

Like others have touched on, this movie is linked to Brandon Lee and Brandon's death. For me, the movie is a memorial to him. But more than that, this movie is so good, so raw. I think a remake will just spit all over the memorial aspect and the greatness of it.

reply

I don't normally watch remakes and don't plan to see this one. I'm especially annoyed by this remake since Lee was great in the role. There hasn't been a decent Crow sequel or TV series and I don't expect this to be the exception. How about an original movie idea?

reply

Its too iconic.

Would you remake Die Hard, Star Wars, the Godfather? I think these kinds of movies should just be left alone as classics

reply

he was killed

he died making that film

a lot of people kinda see the film as his resting place

and they understandably dont want anyone disturbing it with a remake no one asked for

reply

I am not against a remake as it will be a different interpretation of the book, not a remake of the 1994 film.

People who are against it are looking at it from an emotional point of view. Take that away and you may see that there is a chance for the new film to be more faithful to the graphic novel.

reply

"looking at it from an emotional point of view" . . .

It's funny how, almost universally, when something like this is said, it's a criticism.

Think about that for a minute. CHALLENGE yourself against the grain of this for one minute.

What a sh!tty world we live in where emotion is something to be criticized and cold, dead logic is the god.

Why isn't an "emotional point of view" worth consideration? There are some things based on emotion that are positives in our culture, not negatives.

Sure, a remake of the book might be more true to the book -- but when you see that they are now considering Jason Momoa --- who in at least one role he's already done LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE BRANDON LEE AS THE CROW.....

er nope. That isn't true to the book but it looks an awful lot to me like a remake of BRANDON'S Crow.
