This movie is not good

I just watched The Crow for the first time after meaning to for years. I had no expectations so it wasn't a let down or anything. But I want to explain my thoughts and see if anyone else felt the same way or what anyone else's opinion is.

I found the movie to be goofy even though it was trying to be serious. It has some horribly cheesy lines (which I enjoyed laughing at but still probably wasn't intentional).

The effects have aged pretty badly, though I tried to ignore that and instead put myself back in a 90s mindset. Though, they definitely didn't help.

The characters were nobodies with no real depth. They just had some silly lines and fake-feeling relationships that didn't make me feel anything for them. The cop just believes that Eric was invincible because he told him he was and I'm pretty sure he saw no proof of this until the end of the movie.

I just didn't buy Eric's relationship with the young girl. The movie TOLD ME to care. But it didn't actually make me care at all.

Eric also had these fun/funny killer moments and lines that didn't really match the dark tone or match how angry I thought he was supposed to be.

The plot has simply been done before and after and better. He kills a bunch of guys and eventually fights the main bad guy. He loses his powers when the crow is killed... but then the crow isn't really dead... and he kinda still has his powers, but also doesn't have them...? What?

There was nothing special about this movie to me, at all. Its just there.

The idea and dark look are great and I hope the remake finally happens. I feel like they'll actually get it right this time.

Disagree with almost everything you said. The parts that didnt make sense to you do make sense, maybe you should watch it again. The effects are bad though and they were bad when the movie came out too, but that's not making or breaking anything. The crow really is a great and legendary movie and I personally hope a remake never happens.

I agree with wolf!

There's plenty of dumb action movies for you.

reply

Nah. That reply isn't gonna work for me. I like good movies. I particularly dislike Transformers and other similar dumb mindless action movies.

I honestly found The Crow to be dumb and mindless.

Yeah but that dirt bike scene is cheesy

Huh? Are you maybe talking about part 2, City of Angels? I can't think of even one scene in the first move where there's a dirt bike, let alone a motorcycle...

reply

What dirt bike scene? Maybe you are confusing the original with the second one.

Even in that case Ducati is far from the realm of dirt bikes.

-- The effects have aged pretty badly, -
Why because you can't see the painfully obvious CG in films of today?

-- The cop just believes that Eric was invincible because he told him he was and I'm pretty sure he saw no proof of this until the end of the movie. --
The cop, knew Eric was dead, so therefore having somewhat of an upper hand in things. That scene could not have been any more obvious. Remember in the station??

-- The plot has simply been done before and after and better. He kills a bunch of guys and eventually fights the main bad guy. --
As it is in most movies.

-- but then the crow isn't really dead... and he kinda still has his powers, but also doesn't have them...? What? --
The Crow is wounded, so to then is Eric.

No there is no reason for a remake with, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh just the thought of the tacky CG effects makes me feel faint. I can only imagine in a nightmare what the music will be.

If a remake happens, -- -- The plot has simply been done before and after and better. He kills a bunch of guys and eventually fights the main bad guy.--
You didn't like it in the original but wish to see it in a remake.

None of these replies really challenge anything I said. None of them change my mind. None of you guys actually replied to the important things I brought up like character development and good writing. You only responded to my little plot point issues and my CG comment (which as I said, doesn't ACTUALLY bother me).

So my opinion still stands and I feel no need to give the movie another try.

reply

Why should people waste energy when you obviously won't change your mind about it? People like the movie, get over it. It's wildly considered to be a classic and nothing you can do will change that. You talk about the writing in this yet laud The force awakens which pretty much has the same Hero's Journey story that every movie has.

The film is a good dark atmospheric action flick with a likeable protagonist, good music, interesting set design and a combination of noir and fantasy elements. The story isn't supposed to be that complicated, so its possible you're just looking for something that was never there.

There's not much else that can be said really. You don't like it, move on.

reply

Wow, typical overreacting internet douchebag response right there. I seek a discussion. I'm not trying to change anybody's mind.

reply

Hey sorry, I don't intend to be mean.

I've stated why I like this film, and many others have as well. Criticism is fine, but you have to make specific reasons as to why you didn't like something. If you give blanket statements you'll receive the same sort of results.

Don't apologise to him - The guy is obviously a bulbous cock-womble. I dare him to do any better or come up with anything, movie, art or music that challenges the norm.

reply

Honestly it's not for everyone. But the revenge aspect of it was good. The main character was solid and the villains were so over the top, which was common in the 80s and 90s.

reply

To the Op, I agree with you.

I had always heard of this movie, and it's iconography is neigh inescapable but I never saw it and felt I was missing out. I liked Dark Cirty, I think Poyas is under rated, so I gave The Crow a shot.

And like you said the effects don't bother me, as in Dark City, the fact that they used models is pretty cool and gives it an interesting look, as far as acting, story, dialogue, action and music were concerned I felt the movie plain stunk.

It's way too cliche to be interesting and it's way too over the top to be believable. Plenty of movies use going over the top well but this movie just felt too cheesy.

I can see that everyone was on Coke when this was made, and what a piece of *beep* movie to die while making.

I could understand if people loved it as one of those it's so bad it's good, but it's not even that.

I'm not trying to *beep* on anyone's opinion, to each their own, but don't act like this movie is Citizen Kane, it can barely hold a candle to the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

reply

Honestly, I think it's just that you didn't watch it soon enough in life. This movie, for 1994, was nothing like what anyone had seen before: An independent comic book movie, with hard rated-R violence and spectacular visuals (again, for its time), backed by an amazing soundtrack and score, with a tragic real life story of an iconic legends son dying while making it.

I don't agree with the OP's criticisms of the movie as they're stated, but at least admitting to the combination of all the facts I mentioned happening near twenty-five years ago as being absolutely the right recipe to make this a cult classic today is something that should never be disputed. Plus, you gotta kinda give the movie some space with its failures since Brandon dying did make it near impossible to finish correctly. For instance, if you look at the trivia section there's a newer entry talking about the main characters powers being different in the original cut of the movie than what ended up on screen (your specific "crow being injured somehow affecting the hero's powers" point). Alterations like these were all post-Brandon passing away, and all done more than a year since he had passed on because of the movie being stuck in limbo before its release.

I have no problems with movie watchers not liking this (it's personally one of my all time favorites), and all I can comment on is that it's not a movie that can compete with what has been filmed since 1994 - mainstream or independent. BUT, to deny its influence and game changing effect on Hollywood is a bit asinine (which the OP never stated, but others in the replies that followed have). There are plenty of great examples of proper story telling, art direction, acting, early cg effects, music, etc that this movie gives, but admittedly it's a movie of its time.

I do recommend that if anyone who doesn't get this film or understand why it's popular who wants to try and learn about it, that they should listen to Alex Proyas' bluray commentary for the film. There are so many interesting little ideas and decisions he made that carried over in to other movies that many directors overuse today, probably not even knowing that it came from The Crow to begin with.

Come on man... BATMAN AND BLADE RUNNER HAD A PRETTY SIMILAR VISUAL STYLE TO THIS!

i agree that there's nothing special about this movie. it's pretty cheesey and cliche. i have an impression that opinion which says that this movie is extraordinary or something like that, was somehow carved in pop culture and in our minds and some ppl just go with it wihtout second thought. like i said, there nothing special about this movie. and if it wasn't for tragic death of brandon lee, this movie would be simply forgotten and without reruns on tv. his tragic death on the set was something could not happen and some ppl mix his death, the real drama that happened during filming with quality of this movie. life wrote darker and more bankable scrip than screenwriters.

reply

I don't think I've seen even fans of this film claim that it's "extraordinary." Even on this board, some of the people who love this movie like crazy, I'm not sure I've ever seen one of them say they think it's something completely Citizen Kane-like in the annals of filmmaking history.

What I have seen is people saying this film is special to them, and the furthest I've seen is opinions that for its genre it's a pretty cool movie that has a lot of heart, and there's a terrific sense of atmosphere.

The people who knock it blow up the praise in a kind of straw man argument, when all I've seen in the praise is not wild claims of anything extraordinary, just appreciation for what it IS good for.

The fact that the girl who played Sarah couldn't act her way out of a paper bag ruined it for me...

Every time she appeared on screen, the whole film just sputtered to a halt...

Ernie Hudson didn't help either... badly miscast...
