did anyone notice that.since the got down south, evrything was stretched out vertically..but when troy was at the airport (before she went to see her mother in the hospital) everything was back to normal. i wonder why it was chosen to be like that. its kinda annoying actually..

That was a decision by Spike to shoot those scenes like that. He wanted to show how alien that living was to Troy.
shareWhen I was 6 or 7 years old I got sent 'down south' to stay with relatives (who were complete strangers to me) for a few weeks, just like Troy. This is exactly how I felt, like landing in the Twilight Zone. Everything looked strange, everyone spoke strange.
And folks kept telling me to "shut your mouth, you gone get us lynched".

shareI saw an interview w/ Spike Lee as this movie was released. This was done purposely and stylisticly to represent how uncomfortable and disorrienting the "country" surroundings were for city-girl Troy. In the theatrical release, they even went so far as to warn viewers ahead of time so that they wouldn't get up and complain to the theater that there was a problem. IMO, it really was an effective technique.

It was a real stupid attempt by Spike Lee believing his audience was too stupid to figure out that her environmental change wasn't drastic enought.... he had to create this effect to uphold that by not giving his actors, wardrobe or art department enough credit that they could accomplish that idea in the performance. Very sad and pathetic. I feel sorry for all the actors in that segment.
I personally, think it's an insult as an audience member and to the actors...as if they couldn't give a performance to show they knew they were in a weird environment they were not used to. Who HASN'T had an experience of environment changes....(and happy to say without wearubg distortion glasses) I'm too stupid to NOT get the point via the details of Brooklyn setup into a midwestern/southern household change. Why were none of the Brooklyn shots distorted also for the sake of Midwesterners who have never been to Brooklyn? Are they not seeing this movie across the U.S.? Would a midwesterner/southerner expect to show up in Brooklyn with distorted glasses on because they would be too stupid to figure out their environment completely changed!.
It was a really badly executed idea. I wish they would release a "corrected" version of this.

My interpretation is that it was to emphasize the different world they were living in from Brooklyn.
Hahaha we just watched this last night and thought it was the transfer...my husband tweeted at Spike Lee saying he should do something about that transfer and how awful it looked, and he was like "That Is On Purpose. Directorial Decision."
