i didn't like how the brothers disrespected their mom in the beginning, when they said "i'd rather have a father than a mother anytime" and they actually got what they asked for when she died. i know they didn't really mean it but it still wasn't right.

I thought it was awful mean that the brothers had to say that about their mother, especially the oldest brother, I can see why the mother got on the brothers' case with what they said, I think he later regreted wishing what they said

Well kids are kids. They're blunt and foolish and say things they later regret.
