I liked this one better but it would help if you included what you didn't like about patriot games.
shareWell i guess i didn't think there was anything in it that really caught my intention, but its kind of hard for me to explain really, the movie just felt kind of flat for me.

Well that makes it tough for me to say whether you'd like this one or not. The story is much more involved, that's for sure. Morality is what's at stake here, as opposed to personal vendetta. I think there's a chance you could enjoy this, even if Patriot Games wasn't your thing.
shareOkey, i believe i'll check it out on day, Dafoe is also something that should be able to add something for me when it comes to this one.

I'd have to go with Patriot Games as the better movie of the two. Hunt for Red October is still by far the best in the series.
shareI do prefer this over Patriot Games but both are pretty solid.
shareI agree. They are just about different things.
CPD has historical relevance. You could see how the war in Iraq is just like this on a much bigger scale. No need to engage in military adventurism in secret just convince(Lie to) enough people it is the right thing to do.
Clear and Present Danger is the far superior film in terms of pacing, action, and suspense.
Patriot Games takes a while to get going and when it does it doesn't really go anywhere.
The ending is kind of over-the-top, and all between then it just kind of meanders.
Clear and Present Danger definitely feels more like a faster-paced Tom Clancy novel come to life. There were still some silly parts in there, but it was far superior to Patriot Games in terms of keeping viewers interested and having a lot more moving parts at play. It's a good political-war thriller.
This movie definitely feels more like a Clancy novel, in that we got the President involved, and we get a lot of Ryan actually being at work doing his job, and all the intrigue and moving parts on a global scale. Much bigger stakes. I love Patriot Games but I found it a very odd choice to try and launch Ford's take on the character in what was clearly hoped to be a new hit series for him. For sure both movies fail to capture the magic of October and i'm not sure they would have gotten it right with a third film either. Even the later films and now the tv series failed to reach those heights. While a similar themed show like 24 is engrossing as all hell. I'm not sure why the character/novels are so hard to adapt to screen.
shareYou know, I never really thought about it, but you're right that 24 actually does feel more like a Tom Clancy novel than the actual Tom Clancy properties adapted to screen. It's kind of bizarre in some ways.
It really takes great writers, a believable cast, and a production crew willing to work hand-over-fist to bring it all together. And yeah, Patriot Games was a weird choice to use as a launch pad for a new series of films with Ford. I'm also curious why they abandoned Alec Baldwin? I thought he was great in The Hunt For Red October and he felt more... tactically adjusted for the task at hand than Ford, the latter of whom played up the paper-pushing analyst role well but made it hard to believe he was also adept at being a boots-on-the-ground asset.
