People really like this film?

It seems like an average movie with a few great scenes here and there. The problem is that absolutely nothing seems to be happening... I was bored to tears when I was watching this movie!

reply

Yeah people only like this film because Quentin Tarantino does.

Hence why it is so highly rated

reply

I didn't think much of it when I first saw it but after multiple viewings it has become one of my favourite movies. The whole pineapple can thing is so poetic and sad that you really feel for what Takeshi K is going through. Oh and you gotta admit that Faye Wong was sensational.

reply

Yes, I found the actors very charismatic.

I was really looking forward to this film after Quentin Tarantino hyped it up. I guess I will rewatch it someday...

reply

Yeah, I'd come back to it someday with a different frame of mind going into it. This movie isn't so much about plot or "things happening", but the overall tone and feeling. You really have to be in the right mood for it. Try it out when you're feeling lonely/disconnected like the characters in the movie.

reply

If you're in the mood for some 'Mamas & Papas' then watch it right away.

reply

I quit watching after 1 hour, no decent storyline or character development at all.

The only thing I could appreciate was the way it was shot, but it couldn't grab my attention at all.

reply

i really liked it

reply

First hour??? Did you at least see the wonderful Faye Wong?

reply

Faye Wong really wasn't great, she was very irratating

reply

How can you find her irritating when you can't even spell the word?

reply

Because being able to spell the word has no relevance at all as to whether or not I feel irritated.

@gapinghole the 16 year old

know whats funny? people that assume $hit.. i saw this movie way before anyone recommended to me simply because i love the works of Wong Kar Wai.. now unlike you, Quentin Tarantino has a good eye, like me and %90 of the people here on imdb to know its a good movie. Now let me assume that you assume because its recommended by him you think we all think its a good movie for a pointless reason? No we watch a movie and we judge for ourselves you stupid monkey.

reply

...Chill. Approaching this film with no context or preparation, that's the correct reaction.

I could argue why it's correct, but that risks this becoming something long and involved. Instead, just consider the following, which is concise and incontestable: Correct or not, the reaction had by people like "gapinghole" is certainly valid.

reply

I still think the best thing Tarantino has ever done was bring this, The Beyond, and especially Sonatine to America.

The film isn't about having a twisting plot or trialed characters. If you want that, Hollywood churns out formulaic sh*t by the second.

This film is moved by aesthetic. It's more about the craft (that is, being made in a two month interim of a bigger movie) and the allusion (of Godard and the like) than what's actually happening in the film.

So what you are saying is this movie is self-indulgent tripe?

So, what you're saying is that you must be the pretentious one for telling others not to like this with such an ignorant statement.

reply

I have to agree, it's got some beautiful parts, but overall the film is really boring. It put me to sleep in the middle of the day! Shallow characters, not much of a plot happening, drawn out over way too long. I should also add that it's not very realistic, and in fact a pretty lame story about a loser who can't get over his girlfriend.

I absolutely loved it and think that it is one of the best movies made in modern time.

It's great if you like movies where people shout small talk at each other while listening to "California Dreaming" with the volume up too high.

reply

That's just all kinds of wonderful, isn't it?

reply

Well, thats what I like

reply

By the way, I didn't like this because of Quentin Tarantino, which a lot of you guys are strongly implying. I didn't even know he was advertising this movie. I watched this film with NO KNOWLEDGE of who Wong Kar Wai is. This is my introduction to his film style and guess what, I fell in love.

I liked this because it really spoke to me. Plus the ending is the best I've seen - tied with Fallen Angels.

I am really tired of all these people on imdb who trash a film for being "boooring"...
Honestly, this film is considered by many as one of the best films ever made. It was voted best Honk-Kong movie of the 1990s. I hear that it is very often used in film class. It's considered a wonderful, inspiring movie by a great number of viewers including myself.

So if you had the impression that "nothing's happening" in this film, and don't understand how people can like it, well... it seems pretty obvious that something IS happening but you missed it.
Now, I don't know why you missed it. It could be that like many viewers on imdb (apparently) you have the attention span of a goldfish and that your taste is formatted by American movies (that may have a lot of action, etc, but are often way more empty in so many ways than Chunkging Express).
It might also be that you were tired when you watched the film, or that the film simply does not "speak" to you because of your life story or whatever.

But I find it incredible that when people are bored by a film that is so revered, they can still trash it with no other explanation than "I was bored, nothing happened in that movie."
In theory there is no reason to think that people who love this film have decided to pretend they saw things happening, when there was nothing.
So it's not difficut to infer from that that you have missed things, instead of adopting a very dismissive attitude and claim the movie is overrated.

And for those who think people watch this because of Tarantino, well, your vision is not just ignorant but also very ethnocentric.
I watched it because Wong Kar Wai is a very famous director, and the two male leads of the film are very famous actors that I love, so I was curious.
Then I watched all the other WKW films, and I loved them all, but this one remains my favourite.

BTW I also like Tarantino and I don't think the pretentious ones are those who worship him, but rather all those who used to worship him or at least had no problem with him when he won a Palme d'Or and began trashing him when he became popular.
