Butch's Mother

In the movie, before Pete can visit with Butch, another guy tells him that Butch's mom is charging money ($1,000) to speak to her son, isn't that some sort of NCAA violation? I would think that would be the same as a university paying money directly to the athlete. Anyone know anything about this?

reply

Yes, it's a clear NCAA violation....Student-athletes are prohibited from receiving any benefits (including cash). The exception to this rule is the stipend/meal money, books, and other documented assets associated with their athletic scholarships.

To take money for a visit is a major recruiting violation and anyone who paid it would be open to sanctions.

Yea that was kind of the entire point of the movie...

"The little things...there's nothing bigger in life."

Nope the NCAA has now said it is ok for a parent to ask for money. She should have asked for more. Cam Newtons father asked for over $100,000 and the NCAA said it was perfectly fine!

That was a "Church Donation" that the Newtons received. Apparently, the SEC is filled with amazing Christian coaches who wanted to give back to the Lord :-)
