Why was the film called 'Blue Chips'?

Anybody out there know why the film was called "Blue Chips"?

A very good movie too by the way. Nick Nolte was absolutely sensational in this film.

reply

"Blue Chips" is a term used for top prospects or highly rated recruits usually associated with basketball and football. So, in this movie, Shaquille O'Neal, Penny Hardaway, and the white guy are "blue chip" recruits or "blue chippers." Hope that helps.

reply

That "white guy" was Matt Nover, a stellar college basketball player in his own right.

reply

well, we all know how his career panned out...
same goes for penny

They do suggest at first with heavenly shows."

Its too bad what happened to Penny he was great back in his days at Orlando.

Yeah, 7 points per game and 4.1 rebounds per game for his career is real stellar.

Not everything is about points and rebounds...

reply

Brilliant. Please explain to me what was stellar about a below average white guy on a good team? What was stellar was the fact he went to Indy in the first place.

reply

he was a roll player

reply

does that mean likes to finger-roll or when he shoots he gets the roll?

reply

Maybe your all wrong and he, the director, was thinking of the film while he was eating a chip, but, it was blue? ... hmmm ... concept

reply

No, he differently not wrong, A blue chip prospect, is a top 100 recruit, it is a shame what happened to Penny Hardaway he was great I used to love watching the Magic play him and Shaq were extremely exciting. and as for his low points and rebounds that was in the pro's there are a lot of great college players who don't cut it in the NBA, and that's why he is really playing in Europe.

reply

Actually, Nover scored 11 points and 6 rebounds his final year, which is darn good for the college level, where teams don't average 95-105 points per game.

I never said he wasn't decent, he just isn't stellar (as one poster claimed).

reply

He ended up having a decent career in Europe, too, didn't he? I could be wrong.

reply

Yeah, he played in Portugal and in Australia. I don't know if he still plays. Probably doesn't since he would be in his 40s by now.

reply

In Poker, it's customary to use different colored chips to keep track of the players' winnings. The "blue chips" are the most valuable ones. I figured that's where the name came from; the "blue chips" are the most valuable players.

reply

The term Blue Chip is usually used for the stock market to describe a "can't miss" investment. For the purpose of this movie, "investment" being the key word. They invested lots of money on these players who were supposedly "can't miss" prospects.
