The athletes help ruin this film

What was William Friedkin thinking when he cast Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway for this film? They're both such horrible actors! I'm sure he could've just found some actors, who happen to be fine athletes as well, and put them through basketball training camp or something. I admire Nick Nolte more for pulling off a great performance while acting opposite such stonefaced "actors." I never thought I'd say this, but Larry Bird's performance overshadows the performance of all the other athletes.

Guyfromjerzee,

Come on man, are you serious? Had they just got regular actors would this film had made what it did? The main draw to this film was Shaq and Penny! I for one wouldn't have seen it had they not been in it. Not that this film smashed the box office, but this flick woulda did a damn hell of alot worse without them.

Just as the other poster said, it's easier to teach an athelete to act, than it is to teach an actor to be an athlete. Think about it, who would you rather see in a B-A-S-K-E-T-B-A-L-L MOVIE? Shaq and Penny, authentic pro ballers, or some random black actors? Look at how bad Omar Epps looked during the ball scenes for Love & Basketball, you could tell the man can't play. I thought that Shaq and Penny did a great job with the acting, what more did you want? What did you expect, an Oscar performance?

Ok so you're in charge of making Blue Chips Guyfromjerzee. Who actors do u have instead of Shaq/Penny? I personally cannot name a single actor that can play ball, with the exception of Duane Martin.

Stonefaced actors, lol. People saw this movie cuz Shaq and Penny are sick ballers (at the time, lol) Who sees this, except you of course, for their acting? For the purpose of this movie, their balling in the movie WAS their acting. And that's why people went to see it.

This film would not have been a movie about basketball without ball players. It wasn't just Shaq and Penny, who were teammates for the Magic at the time. All the teams were made up of guys who had just finished playing college ball. It looked like there was real basketball going on, because there WAS real basketball going on. Putting together a bunch of reels of actual pickup games with high level Division I talent has to look better than a bunch of bigshot Hollywood guys asking for their motivation every five seconds.

Can you imagine this scenario. The actor is getting ready set a high pick before slipping to the basket, stops and yells to the director, "Hey, how is my character feeling right now?!" The director says, "You f#cking idiot, you aren't feeling anythinng! It's basketball! Just play!"
