Based on Jerry Tarkanian and UNLV??

I read a book named "Shark Attack" and there were many things that I noticed in cotrast to this movie.
The biggest part of this movie was the "fixer" who arranged for the gifts to be given to the recruited players, something similar to the 1990 incidents that occured with the UNLV team. And another was Nick Nolte's resentment towards the fixer in addition to the media and the university, which I noticed when I read of Tark, who was practically harassed 24/7 by the NCAA and the school president. I heard Nolte's character was inspired by Bob Knight, but I would also think the events sound like the UNLV scandals in essence.

i don't have read that book but I assure you that the character of Pete Bell it stole plenty from Bobby Knight - I was a basketball fan those times - the scene where Pete Bell send the ball to the ceiling was taken as-is from a similar real-word scene where Knight kicked a ball in that way during a game. But this is where the similarities ends - Bobby Knight bad attitudes was renowed as much as his honesty and maybe this is the why of his choice but Indiana, his team, wasn't involved in all that sh*t. As far as I knew...

it may have been. I'm from Las Vegas, though I admit I didn't keep up with the controversies. I do remember one incident where some players were in a hot tub of some guy who was black listed from a casino or something. I'm sorry, I can't remember all the details. He may have even been called the fixer.

I hate to think that UNLV bought their title. I was so happy when they won. But let's face it, how is a small school like UNLV going to compete with the big name basketball colleges such as Indiana, NC, etc?

We always had a lot of trouble putting together a good team. We could maybe get one or two (such as Armon Gilliam during his years), but not 5 players. We even had a good backup that year iirc.

Recruiting is a hell of a thing for a team, perhaps that is one reason I like this movie so much.

Coudnt' get good players?

Hmmmm...on one team you had:
Larry Johnson
George Ackles
Stacey Augmon
Greg Anthony

That's pretty much all you needed.

This movie is not based on just one event, but by every shady scandle that we saw blossom in this time. The Arizona State gambling scandal, Northwestern football gambling scandal, Fab- Five's controversies, etc etc etc. I love this movie. I'm glad somebody approached the fun, dark- world of sports with gambling, shady recruiting, buying players. Hell, we get Blue Chips sequels and prequels and so on all the time. Toledo in 03/04/05, Donaghy (NBA) with his fixing the games as a ref, Northern Colorado (present).

But out of them all, I have to say Arizona State football and basketball gambling scandal's have to be the perfect premise for this story. As you remember in Blue Chips, they bought football players and bball players, had gambling and shaving points with basketball. Zona St. was accused of offering money to five football players and three basketball players, as well as shaving hardcore points.

Actually its based on alot of major programs in america. Most of the major programs in america cheat flagrantly. But the ncaa doesnt investigate the major programs. Because they are all money making machines. The only teams that get investigated are the small schools who start landing good players. As soon as they start to become a threat to the big boys,(make the big dance) they send their investigator buddies at the NCAA to put a stop to it.

As far as Tark was concerned, the ncaa was after him since his days at Long beach state. Tark starting recruiting black players from the Ghettos which was a cardinal sin back then... they hounded him for years to no avail. They could only find minor trivial things that no other coach would be penalized for.

So When he got to UNLV they only persued him harder. The kids had no idea who Richard the fixer was. Some of the kids actally knew him as a basketballl coach back east. They just thought they were hanging with their friend the coach.

They never stopped chasing Tark even when he coached At his alma mater Fresno state. He finally gave in and retired for good. But, the Ncaa had to pay tark 2.5 million in a lawsuit he filed for violating his rights for 26 years in 1998.

When UCLA won in 1995 the program was dirty too. That's why Steve Lavin left.

The movie is ACTUALLY based on former Army, Clemson, Miami University and Jacksonville coach Tates Locke. While certain personality traits/quirks are obviously taken from more contemporary coaches (although Locke immediately preceeded Knight at Army) the Story is based, for the most part, on Locke's story.
All the rest is conjecture; it's not Tark, Knight or anyone else... but Tates Locke.

I heard it was based off Tates Locke career. He coached at Indiana St., but I don't know if any of this refers to his tenure there.

On February 11, 2015 Jerry Tarkanian passed away at the age of 84 in Las Vegas, where he had been hospitalized days earlier after difficulty breathing. The city of Las Vegas that day lowered its flags at City Hall to half-staff in tribute to him.

This was not about Jerry T.

It's about Tates Locke when he was at Clemson from 1970 to 1975.
