When the dad of Ricky asks coach Bell what kind of baptist he is and Bell answers "First, of course". The dad says good and makes it clear he doesn't like southern baptists.....
What was that all about ? Whats his problem with southern baptists ?
Southern Baptists are more from the southern states. Alabama, Mississippi, etc. and tend to be more of their parishioners are predominantly black. It was basically a question which showed Ricky Roe's father to be a racist. Pete Bell just guessed correctly by saying "First Baptist of course"
" Tell me mom...when your little girl's on the slab...where will it tickle you?"
I really don't think that is what he meant by that. I believe he was referring to the different views that Southern Baptists have regarding the Bible than his group of Baptists do. As you can imagine each group believes they are right and some people in these groups can be worse than others. He didn't want his son going to play for a coach who wasn't of the same religious mindset he was. I live in the South by the way and went to a Southern Baptist church and there aren't more blacks in these churches than white. So it wasn't a racist question..
Another thing I want to say is there is no thing as just being a "First Baptist"... There different types of baptists like American, Free Will, Southern, etc (do a search on Baptist denominations and you can see them all).
I know this a very late reply - but just in case somebody else sees this - I'm pretty sure Ricky Roe's father had racist implications about "Southern Baptist". Reasoning - Nick Nolte later went out to recruit Neon (Shaq); who was shown to attend a Pentecostal church. Nolte pretended to be raised in a predominantly black church; which is very different to the church that Ricky Roe's father attends. This was done to show that Nolte was prepared to tell whatever lies he had to; if it helped with recruiting.
Would you say that a lot of First Baptists are quite racist and/or that their church is predominantly white? I appreciate that it's a difficult question, because no-one wants to bad-mouth any groups of individuals, but a generalisation would be appreciated.
