I like the movie and the actors. But Jeff Bridges Boston accent is the worst I have ever heard.

Yeah his was pretty bad. I remember at the end he calls the girl sweetHAHHHHHT; it was just too enunciated. I thought Forest Whitaker's was not so bad though

You gotta love Lloyd Bridges' accent in this movie though. He nailed the old Irish guy part. He was one of my favorite actors of all-time.

I picked up this movie on TV about 30 minutes into the film, and it was only when I heard the song 'A nation once again' that I realised that Tommy Lee Jones' accent was suppose to be Irish. It was a murderous mish mash of Scots and American. Lloyd Bridges wasn't to bad, but his son Jeff who was supposed to have come from Belfast didn't have a trace of a Northern Irish accent. I also felt that the film got very unbelievable at times. Too much OTT with the explosions.

The accents were absolutely ridiculous. I'm Irish and I had trouble understanding anything TLJ was saying. Lloyd Bridges was also completely stage Irish. I think Hollywood should give up on trying to do Irish as they NEVER get it right. Other glaring 'Irish' rubbish in the film - I assume the name 'Gaerity' was supposed to be 'Geraghty' which is a correct Irish name - 'Gaerity' is only a phonetical version of it which no Irish person (particularly a mad patriotic IRA bomber) would ever change to. Other names like 'Max O'Bannon' would simply not exist in Ireland either. The 'guinness' served in the pub had no head - how can they be so stupid as to not have a white head on an iconic drink like guinness! Aslo, Irish people as a rule do not tend to stand around singing rebel songs and weeping about the old country - they have far better thing to do like having a life!

I totally agree. Caught the last half hour of the film and heard the accents. They were terrible! Especially Jeff, he just had his usual accent (Im guessing). I heard an occasional change which I suppose was supposed to be an Irish accent! Why do they always try and do an Irish accent, or even an English one. They are terrible! No one ever speaks like that. I would know seeing as Im English and have Irish relatives! Im not going to get started on the other stuff going on in that film!

It wasn't supposed to be an Irish accent, it was supposed to be a Boston accent. Even so, though, it wasn't done well.

I absolutely love TLJ, and I'm sure he did his best, but I can never understand why film makers do this. If the character is Irish, then hire an Irish actor, for god's sake. It's not as if there aren't plenty of wonderful Irish actors around. This is one of my biggest pet peeves in film. Either use an actor from the right country (or city, in the case of Boston), or don't bother with the accents at all.
