I think it only appeared that Jimmy's friend heard him. As soon as they both turned around, they immediately looked up to the helicopter.

Maybe they thought the helicopter was going to fall on Jeff Bridges. But then they noticed he was not carrying two Vietnamese children so they went back to their work.
