I might be getting my cop shows mixed up, but I think it was a 'Frost' episode. It involved the boyfriend of Denton cop, who claimed to be a Met. cop, staying in Denton to recuperate from an injuy. He kept trying to help Frost on a case. They found out later that the guy was never cop at all, just a frustrated ex-army redcap, that got rejected by the police.
Like I said, it may not have been 'Frost' at all.

I think thats in the episode 'Appropriate Adults' He wins a pool match against another station that has beat denton for years so denton get the trophy for once much to Mullets delight but at the end they have to give it back because he was a fake copper much to Frosts amusement.

Thanks! The police wouldn't hire hm because he was 'just a squaddie'.
