so i just started watching this and i was wondering if each season is one year? or is the timeline different?

It ran in realtime. The summer breaks were really summer breaks with (obviously) no episodes and the holiday episodes were usually celebrated in the same week as Xmas and Thanksgiving, or at least very close. They followed the calendar rather closely. I'd link you to the synopsis here at IMDB for all the episodes but it would be a huge spoiler for you. By season three the series won a surprise Golden Globe and justly deserved, superb content.
