Rewatching this show was a huge mistake!

I loved this show when I was younger and when I saw it on Hulu I started binge watching it. Terrible. Idea. As an adult, this show is ridiculous. I pray that I didn't act as silly as Julia when I was her age....and Claudia, well, she makes me thankful that I don't have children. Sarah & Justin are the only two likable characters.

I liked Sarah at first. But by the end I couldn't stand her. She didn't have any spine, any self respect nor did she love herself. Took her too long to walk away. However, now that I think about it she was infatuated with him from the very beginning, when he had absolutely no interest in her. Doing all these things like starting a campaign for him. Bailey never deserved her. I will say I don't like weak women characters personally. So I may be biased.

Bailey was probably the worst character. He was completely insufferable and I'm not surprised he ended up alone at the end. At least Charlie changed his womanizing ways and became a good husband, but Bailey just became even more intolerable as the seasons went on and basically screwed over every woman who had the misfortune of encountering him. He was a walking disaster.

I got the first 3 seasons on DVD for my wife. I only watched it a few times in its initial run, but she watched it all of the time in college.

She was so pumped to watch it, but after most every episode would say, "I don't remember Baily (or Julia) being so horrible. How did I ever like watching a show with such miserable excuses for human beings?"

We've had it for over a year and haven't finished season 3 yet.

Why is it forgotten? Because, says Todd VanDerWerff, "it's become a synonym for a kind of TV that's not cool anymore, dominated more by emotional reactions than high-stakes drama, filled with basically good people trying to do what’s basically the right thing."

If you mean that about the Salingers, then I disagree. I think when you whittle away the facade it is quite obvious they aren't that good of people.

I'll grant you not having parents around probably led to that, but there are so many times when they knew what they were doing was wrong and hurtful to their family, but did it anyway.

I liked Sarah as well but it reached the point where the whole situation between her and Bailey...which was the reason for her character's existence...became too unrealistic.

I understand her infatuation with Bailey...at first. Then when he moves on like most guys and starts having sex with other women, she's still following him around like a lost puppy. Hell, it reaches a point where she spends a year living with him while he's in a relationship with Annie. Its ridiculous. Any girl in Sarah's position would have moved on years before she actually did. What makes it even worse is this character wasn't fleshed out enough. She has no friends. Her and Julia barely hang out. She has a dysfunctional relationship with her parents. Sarah just runs in circles around Bailey.

When they do become an actual couple(season 5), its not handled very well at all by the writers. They live like they've been a married couple for years and then of course when Bailey proposes, SHE is the one who backs out! You just spent four years obsessed with Bailey, now that you have him on a silver platter, you decide to walk away? Yeah I know it was due to giving her a spin off show(BAD idea) but it made no sense. Audiences agreed which is why Time Of Your Life was an instant bomb. The Sarah character could not carry her own show.

Also agreee with those who say these characters all become a huge turn off towards the end. By season six you just want them to go away. Claudia was the most likable character on the series but those last two years even she was changing...for the worse. She suffered from borderline neglect the entire series so in reality she might have turned out much worse.

As someone who grew up in the '80s-'90s, I know what you mean.
I watched a lot of sitcoms & primetime (who didn't, I imagine lol) back then, and loved them.
But when I re-visited some of these shows again as an adult, I find myself disliking to downright hating what were once my favorites!

Examples would be Who's the Boss, Perfect Strangers, Everybody Loves Raymond, and even Roseanne.

It seems as if networks agreed with audiences' assessments of the first two I mentioned, as they were pulled off the air again not long afterwards.

Yet, some shows seem to be nearly as GOOD as we remember!
Such as The Golden Girls, All in the Family or Frasier or Married with Children are still hilarious and fun.

I think the reason why some shows *worked* then versus now, is that what we considered entertainment has changed.....as well as the issues that were pertinent.

Long story short, the world is a different place and therefore our minds are as well.
