Who is your favourite character????

Mine is definitely Will Ladislaw, Dorothea and Dr.Lytgate...

reply

Well that is slightly more than one character......

Anyway, my favourite character is without a doubt Will Ladislaw. I can't really explain why I like him so much, I just do. But I suppose he is supposed to be one of the most likeable charcters as he is the hero of the book!

My second favourite character would probably be Dr.Lydgate. I felt really sorry for him and I wished he had discovered something of some significance with medicine so he didn't think he was a failure....I wish he hadn't married Rosamond-she was so irritating!!

reply

Oh I'm extremely sorry if I'm not up to your standard but I love all three of them!!![]

reply

Thank you. I fully accept your apology. But if you want to be up to my high standards then you're going to have to check and correct your spelling of "definitely" in your original post at the start of this thread.

reply

Sorry but I never put that much effort into what I write on IMDB it's not like I write for"The Daily Planet"!!!!

reply

Or punctuation either it seems.......

Also, you might not be writing for a fictional newspaper just yet but even so, I think you should have some consideration for those of us who like to read properly contructed sentences. After all, more people will read posts on IMDb than articles in the Daily Planet....

reply

Not on the "Middlemarch" boards nobody is on these. So I think I will be safe here!!!

reply

Again with the punctuation!!!!!!!

Well have some compassion on my poor nerves!!!! I am on this board and you are on this board so as far as I can tell, there is slightly more than nobody on the board.

reply

Ok, so to get back to the topic of this thread, who is your favourite character out of the three you mentioned and why?

reply

Well I suppose Will Ladislaw because he's the best,he's so nice and I can't see what's not to like about him...

reply

Will

reply

And Will Ladislaw is played by the gorgeous Rufus Sewell. (Will Ladislaw is my favourite by the way) :)

I liked Lydgate best, but also related to Fred (b/c he spent too much, was having a hard time finding a career, but a good guy deep down). Yes, I'm like Fred!

reply

Dr. Lydgate, I think Douglas Hodge performance was brilliant.
I'll marry you Tertius , leave that bitch Rosamond in the dust.

Of course I wouldn't be so angry with Rosamond, if Trevyn McDowell performance wasn't so brilliant as well.

Well, having read the previous messages, I can see that I'll have to watch my spelling & punctuation, but I'm quite well-known for being good at both so I should be okay! :)

Anyway, my favourite character has to be Will Ladislaw. What a charming guy. I love the way he's so understated at the beginning, if you see what I mean - he's not put up as a hero right from the start. Makes a change from other period dramas where the heroes are the reasonably well-off men who are high up in the world - not that I mind them. However, Dorothea is a close second. I've seen her called boring & priggish, but I think she's just a genuinely good person.

Obviously Dorothea, but in an odd way Lydgate too. Of the secondary characters Mary Garth.

As far as the adaptation goes, the vast majority of the characters were excellently cast; however, my favourite has to be Brooke. Robert Hardy perfectly captures his befuddled hypocrisy and truly brings the role to life.

Other favourites are Farebrother, Casaubon, and Mrs Cadwallader, and all the main cast are also well cast. Even the inclusion of Judy Dench at the end is well done, and well before it became cliche for her to appear in every period adaptation going.

If only there was a chance of the upcoming film being cast just as well!

I really liked Will but I hated Hated HATED Rosamund. What a selfish snob! Dr. Lydgate was such a nice guy and she was such a jerk.

Fred was a loser although he finally got his act together and I admired Mary for sticking to her guns and making something of her man.

Dorothea was neat but I would have liked a bit more response to Will. His final scene of leaving is so moving and she just looks at him??? He plays his part VERY well.

I have decided that money is not worth the trouble. All these issues in the movie revolved around money, women marrying to get it, losing it if they married, not having enough of it, yuck. Give me a man with a decent job and I will be content!!!

reply

I too rather liked (the performance by Robert Hardy) of Brooke.

Other than that, it has to be Dodo, WONDERFULLY (and often subtly) acted by Juliet Aubrey

reply

This is so unoriginal but of course my fav is Will, but I feel like I understand Lytgate better.
I think most people like Ladislaw because he's got such a strong character and we'd all like to have that or be with someone like that, but most of us are more human, more like Lytgate.

reply

My heart just bleed for Lytgate. Dorothea found her love eventually. But poor Tertius....

I like Dorothea and Will equally. When I read the book years ago I found her annoying but now I understand her better and appreciate her more.
Will's role is played so well by Rufus Sewell, and it helps that he's so attractive. I don't know how Dorothea could resist him, especially comparing Will with cold fish sickly Casaubon. I'm glad they got the happy ending and I love the kiss at the end even though they could have developed the final scenes a bit more to include some more dialogue.
