Was Jamal a token black?

I've seen people refer to Jamal as the token black character but I didn't really think he was. I usually think of tokens as minor characters who are only there to provide colour and look politically correct, are constantly referenced by race and are stereotypical to boot. Jamal was a major character (in fact, probably the most important character) and didn't have many stereotypical black traits (his family was pretty affluent, he spoke in an educated manner and he liked science and martial arts, both activities associated with Asians). Plus, his race wasn't even mentioned that much, only in his "pink guy" conversation with Rob and Calvin calling him homie. I always thought Jamal and the rest of the ethnic minorities were a sign of the show's true diversity, not fake tokenism like many other shows.
P.S. I'm not saying that black people can't be affluent and speak well in real life, just that the media very often portrays them the other way.

1. Jamal was the main character. The show was about him. In fact, it was to be revealed that Ghostwriter was his ancester.

2. It took place in FRIGGIN BROOKLYN! How could there be a token black guy in New York City? This isn't Friends or Seinfeld where the cast resided in some magical alternate dimension New York where no blacks existed.
