That's a pretty terrible recasting. Florence Pugh as Rachel works, and John Boyega could pull off Ross' character, but the other four aren't remotely close.

Three black guys and three trans women.

reply

Maybe 1 black male 1 Hispanic male 1 White (gay) male
1 Asian (bisexual) Female 1 Indian Female 1 Trans Woman

You're thinking sooo 6 years. Your list isn't diverse enough.

reply

If you think the late 1990s and early 2000s are not the "modern era", you must be twelve.

reply

No I'm just going by the article which seems to suggest that modern is defined as diverse and inclusive. So not just 6 white straight people. Usually though when they try to remake a classic show like Friends they muck it up by pushing agendas instead of just being funny.

reply

No, that's by definition post-modern.

I've been wondering why Friends has come under so much scrutiny lately for having an all white cast. I mean, what is it about this show that's upsetting people so much? It was a pretty harmless show.

reply

Yeah I know. It's not like people are complaining about The Bob Newhart Show or How I Met Your Mother or other popular sitcoms that had all white casts. Only Friends seems to get the hate.

reply

Only Friends seems to get the hate.

It's because the characters in 'Friends' represent upper middle class preppie whites, and these are the type of white people that blacks & browns tend to hate because they don't relate to them. It's the same reason why you constantly see blacks shitting on Taylor Swift and her fans on social media. A combination of jealousy and a feeling of inadequacy at seeing preppie whites having a good time without them.

reply

Wow at how terrible these replacements are. That list made me think I was reading an article from the Onion.

reply

Agreed. Horrible choices. C'mon two blacks and a fat girl? No one would produce it because they'd know it would be a flop.

I get that they need at least one black. But it's supposed to be about the white 20-somethings experience. And yeah, that usually includes a black hanger-on. Fine.

But the characters need to be likable and I don't like any of them.

reply

So Ross and Monica are brother and sisters but one is white and the other black? Yeah ok. Does AI know they are supposed to be related?

The guy cast as Joey doesn't look remotely Italian.

Maybe Florence as Rachel but meh.

Casting for Chandler is even worse than Ross and Monica.

The new Phoebe doesn't look kooky at all.

In the end it depends on the AI and how it has been programmed. I asked Meta to cast for a new version of Buffy and got a diverse cast which was terrible too. It even boasted about how the cast was diverse!

I then asked for an all white cast and it was just as bad.

reply

Hey it worked it Fan4tic! That movie had a black guy with a white sister. But then again it was a bad movie.....

reply

Yeah the one before that was a great film.

reply

What’s wrong if they just cast 6 white people as in the original? We all enjoyed it and didn’t need a representative from every skin color or whatever to identify with the show!

Living Single is another awesome 90s show that had like 5 black folks and it was truly amazing. Loved it. If you recast that would it again have 1 white, 1 black, 1 Asian, 1 this and that? Or would it be 5 black people going through their experiences and making a nice comedic show?

Honestly I don’t need to see checkboxes to feel like the shows connects to me because it doesn’t and jars. I’d rather they tell a good story and then whatever the best folks have to be, let it be. And if something was established then keep that that way. For something new I can agree but don’t change like Superman to black guy etc. for the sake of it.

reply

Yeah anytime you are casting just to check boxes it doesn't work out well.

It's become a gimmick, remake a film or TV show with a "diverse cast" make the male character a woman or Trans etc Boring zzzzzzzzz
