Why so dressed up to hang out at home?
Or a coffee shop?
I don't get that.
They look like they're going out to dinner or a nightclub.

attractive people sell. dumpy people, sitting around in sweats, no one wants to see
shareThey had a sneaky feeling they were gonna be on tv.
shareHow were they dressed up? Because they wore collared shirts? Their clothing choices are consistent with what people actually wore during that time period. In addition Ross, Chandler and Rachel all had jobs where they would've been required to wear more professional looking outfits.
Wearing sweat pants, pajamas or other shitty looking clothing never really was a thing in NYC and that trend didn't become popular until mid to late 00's. Exactly when the show had ended.
They weren't so dressed up on Seinfeld.

shareOP,
They were impeccably dressed for the same reason all their conversations seemed so contrived and choreographed. For the same reason they posed for all those dopey, stupid group photos where they’re draped on each other with that dopey look on their faces.
It was a very crummy, contrived TV show.
I´d argue Jerry was at times overdressed. He would wear those oversized button up dress shirts frequently, even when he was just hanging out at home or a blazer and jeans for his stand up routine. George was well-dressed for the most part, the only one who wasn´t was Kramer.
shareI would say Kramer was generally well dressed, despite what we might think of his fashion sense. He was always in slacks (no jeans) and a collared, button up shirt. And even when they were just walking around or going to the diner he usually had a sports coat on.
shareYeah, I wouldn´t say Kramer was badly dressed but always being dishevelled made him look like a hobo regardless of what he wore but overall I never found the Seinfeld cast to be underdressed. Jerry had bad fashion sense though.
shareJerry always wears clean, newish clothes that fit, usually with a buttoned shirt, and the shirt tail tucked in. The same for George, plus he usually wears slacks. Elaine is almost always in office-appropriate clothes. Kramer is the only one whose style is a bit eccentric, yet he, too, almost always wears slacks. Compared to most people under fifty today, the characters on both "Friends" and "Seinfeld" are very dressy. I don't think I've seen a man without gray hair with his shirt tucked for at least twenty years.
shareYes, they are that dressed up on Seinfeld. In fact, Jerry looks like he's ready to go to a business casual conference when he is a stand-up comedian. People in the 90s didn't dress like slobs. We had jobs.
shareYeah, I get they had to look good, but the "boots, jeans, and fancy dresses" at home seemed to bit too unrealistically uncomfortable for people to wear.
Also, the characters would get new outfits pretty much every week, which is hard to afford for anyone who's not outright rich.
Yes! And it always felt like a set with the large apartment and high ceilings.
shareMore like unrealistically comfortable. Half slice of life, half fantasy
