So what caused the mom to become morbidly obese?

I've only seen this movie once and just recently on Netflix.

Was it the dad hanging himself that caused her to become depressed and stop eating healthy?

The father hung himself and Gilbert's older brother Larry left the family suddenly one day and never came back. She felt abandoned.
