What accent is that?

I'm not from America so I can't tell, but I see it's a bit strange. What is Dwight's accent?

reply

He has a new york accent I believe.

It doesn't really sound like a New York accent. It has almost a rural outdoorsman quality to it. Maybe an upstate New York State accent, but definitely not a city accent that brings to mind Manhattan or Brooklyn or Queens. His speech has aspects that seemed GED-level (not alot of big words or eloquence). Maybe even a woodsman townie accent.

reply

It sounds very Minnesota-ish, but also very Sarah Palin-ish....who is from Alaska.

I'm from Washington. In Washington the "r" is a part of the accent from that region. Not so much anymore, more of a extinct accent actually, but my grandmother used to pronounce Washington "Wa'r'shington, among other things. DeNiro must have done his research.

reply

It did sound a bit Fargo-esque.

None of us can say what De Niro was going for,if, in fact he was trying to talk in an accent other than his own, but he sounded like himself in this movie. De Niro was born in New York City, and to this New Yorker he sounds like a New Yorker. There are variations of a New York City accent from mild to strong to very strong (Ray Ramono, Fran Drescher).

reply

i'm also a new yorker and i have to disagree- he sounded nothing like his natural self.

sounded to me that he was definitely going for a midwestern/pacific northwest accent, not unlike sarah palin's accent (as a poster above mentioned)

reply

DeNiro's New Yawk accent bled through at certain times but he did a pretty good job of getting a northwestern accent going. He always does his research.

1st thing I noticed was the Name of the town -- Cement

There is a town named Cementon in PA around or part of Allentown (Where I was born) I had an Aunt an Uncle that lived there --- Their main business was Cement

They all sounded close to that accent
