What about Pearl?!

Well Pearl was only Caroline's step daughter. Taking her with her would have been on the verge of kidnapping. And knowing Dwight, he wouldn't have let that go. His life is based on a sense of control and power, to take his daughter away would have definitely compromised his that sense of control and power.He would have probably retaliated in a violent way to get back at Caroline and probably Pearl for causing him to "lose face". Caroline could not afford this retaliation, it would have compromised her new found freedom.Of course this isn't to say that Pearl was better off with Dwight, nor do I imply that Caroline didn't care, it's just that at the time this movie takes place there isn't any other option.

I've encountered a lot of ppl like this, they'll mistreat nieces,nephews,step-children,but not their own biological kids. this is the type of father dwight problably was. he yelled at skipper & that was about all-compared to how he treated jack.but he did'nt seem to treat norma & pearl badly.

How come can you ask that? Caroline didnt even give a *beep* for her biolical son, so it is not strange she left Pearl,who was not anything from her.. altough i agree with the above comment.It was Dwight's daughter and Caroline was nobody to take her away from her father.Anyway,Caroline didn't seem to me a good mother.Her son was suffering and she saw how Dwight was constantly attacking Toby and she didn't do anything¡¡ so,if she didn't move one single finger to save her son, why would she do for a girl who was not even her daughter?.Caroline was not like taking away Pearl just because Dwight was a pig.

From the film I don't think Dwight would hurt or insult Pearl. He seemed to be nasty to Toby/Jack and his mom, never to his children.

Well Toby never gave two nickels about her! Every time they are together, she is nice to tim, but Toby dogs her. I think the first time he just glares at her, tells her to shut up, then when she tells him the letters came, Toby just walked off and Pearl just was there like WTF!?
I am going to watch it a 2nd time through to get a better sense of what happened. All the kids where so tight lipped so I can only think they got *beep* over too. Pearl was always with Caroline so with that I think that is what turned her into a "Mother". When Toby rebelled, he told his Mom to go, and run like they used to leaving it all behind. I guess Pearl was in the "it all"

they left the daughter and didn't mention her . why didn't the daughter throw something at the abusive father , she just left.
