Leonardo's acting ability

I think that the only reason I found this movie even half interesting is because of Leonardo's ability to make you sympathize with his character. That and the fact that the character, Dwight, was funny to me, except the times scenes where he became violent with Toby. Back to Leo's acting...if any other actor had played the same character, I doubt I would have even watched the movie to the end. I don't know what it was about him as a young actor but he just had/has the ability to make you feel really sorry for him. I have tried several times to watch What's Eating Gilbert Grape but cannot finish for this very reason. I have to try to remind myself that this is a successful young actor, who's probably one of the least people that should be pitied but I just can't do so. I guess that's all a huge compliment to his acting ability.
