possible foreshadowing for Rollo's fate

Did Rollo survive? There was possible foreshadowing. His wife wrote him a dear John letter telling him she is shacking up with a french POW laborer. He also expressed how he was a counrey bumpkin who wanted farmland in Russia after germany won the war. However at the end, after everyone else in his platoon was killed, we see his division commander surrendering while he is lying on the ground confessing to desserting. Before hand we see Rollo stuff two big sausagies into his jacket. Do you think that perhaps Rollo survived and ended up in GULag? Perhaps being repatriated back to Germany by 1955? Or perhaps he shacked up with a hardy Russian farmwoman in Siberia, after serbing his time in the GULag, and settled down there... did happen to some germans who were release from gulags but not allowed to return home. Just a thought

Well he was asking to be shot as a deserter.. He wanted to be a soldier to the end, I think he cared more about honour, than surviving... Soldiers like him won't commit suicide, but would allow a firing squad to do so, under orders.
