THIS IS HOW THE ORIGINAL ENDING WENT (SPOILERS)

SPOILERS

I used to own a copy of shooting script of SLIVER. Here is how the original ending went, both in the script and the film:

After Carly goes back to her office in a daze (after she is chased by Jack in the stairwell), Jack accosts her outside her building and tells her that Zeke is a killer. Carly goes home and gets a call from Zeke who says "I am watching you." Carly looks into the hidden video camera, trying to hide her fear, and says, "I know you are." She goes to his apartment, and Zeke says he will go out to get something to eat. When he goes out she digs into his closet (like in the reshot ending) and finds the tapes. She watches the tapes of him having sex with Naomi and Vida.

SHe freaks when she sees him coming back in the elevator. She runs up the stairs to her own apartment. When she goes in, she finds Jack waiting for her there. Meanwhile, Zeke finds the tapes of him having sex with the other women playing. He races to Carly's apartment and bangs on the door. Inside, Jack tells Carly to open the door. She does, and Zeke comes in. He sees Jack has a gun, they argue, fight, while Carly stands by looking. The gun goes flying. Carly chases it. Jack grabs CArly's telescope and is about to bludgeon Zeke with it. Carly shoots Jack.

Later, after the police leave, Carly and Zeke go back to his TV room in his apartment. Carly has her back turned to the screen, where the tapes are still playing. Zeke is facing the screen. Suddenly, the picture clears, and we see Gus Hale taking a shower. We see Zeke enter the bathroom and attack Gus. Carly doesn't see this. Zeke does, looking at the screen as they kiss. Then the picture disappears just as Carly turns.

Cut to Carly and Zeke getting married. They go to Hawaii for their Honeymoon. They are in a Helicopter flying into a volcano (alluding to what Zeke said before about wanting to fly into a volcano, and the original opening credits). As they are about to fly into the volcano, Carly turns to Zeke and says "I know you killed them." He looks at her, surprised. Carly tells him she has the tape, and that she saw the screen reflected in a mirror behind Zeke, so she knows. She says that she is hiding the tape in a safe place. A look of understanding passes between them. If he is not faithful to her, she will release the tape and his secret. She tells him she loves him. THe last shot was supposed to be them flying into the volcano.

THE END

Some of the scenes in the trailer that allude to this ending are:

- Carly dropping her glove in the opening tour of the aparmtment, and watching it fall all the way down into the courtyard below

- In the scene, where Jack turns up in her apartment for the first time, he tells her "Five people have died in here in two years, what does that tell you?"

- Carly telling Mrs. MacEvoy on the roof of the building that she will take the apartment.

- ZEke grabbing Carly and telling her he would never kill anyone. THis is right before he fights with Jack, and Jack is shot by Carly. Same type of scene as the original endingk, but different pacing and they are wearing different clothes.

- JAck about to club Zeke with the telescope, and Carly shooting him,

What I read was that they reshot the ending because audiences couldn't buy Carly knowingly staying with a murderer. Made her seem desperate and crazy.

Well, there you go. THere's the elusive original ending of SLIVER... Chances are it will not be part of the DVD....

thanks for that bit of info.

I guess I still prefer the ending we got, although its very sudden.
I just think Carly leaving with the perverted Zeke was a dumb idea, if she knew he was screwing around.

But anywoo, I'll still buy this Unrated dvd, it is a good thriller.

Wow, that's a pretty bad ending (she waits until their HONEYMOON to tell him?!?)

I actually kind of liked the theatrical ending -- and the last line. But the book's ending was better. Why didn't they just film that? (If you have a movie that takes place almost entirely in a skyscraper, how can you not use its height in your climax?)

surfjunkie -

It's been a LONG times since I read it, but I remember it involved the heroine hanging out of her apartment window, having been pushed by the killer (I think it was Zeke in the book). She survived; he died.

Check out the book - it delves a lot more into the thrill of voyeurism.

What I think also helped the book vs. the movie is that you know from the second chapter who the killer is, and the suspense comes from Kay (Carly in the movie) falling in love with Pete (Zeke in the movie) not knowing what we do: that he is a sicko voyeur who has the whole place rigged for video and has killed to protect his secret. In the movie they act as if the killer's identity is one big national secret, when it is so frickin' obvious who it is. Then they reshot the ending, changed the identity of the killer, and made the whole thing even worse.

The problem with the movie, as my brother so astutely put it, it was "just one straight line - her boring life - with no twists or shifts in POV."

The heroine is indeed hanging out of the apartment window, and Pete/Zeka is trying to unhook her fingers from the window sill.
Kay/Carly's cat scratches his face and blinds him. He lives, but what he loves to do best he'll never be able to do again.

Didnt they have trouble shooting the volcano scene? I seem to remember reading an article somewhere that the film crew(not the actors) helicopter actually had to make an emergency landing in the volcano. As I remember everyone was ok.
