I remember this. Ebert didn't even like the play itself. Interesting that I don't see a print review of it on his website.

I'm so surprised that one of the themes flew over Ebert's head. Of course they are all phonies. If there were a "center of humanity" the script wouldn't mention Catcher in the Rye and its themes. The choice of thesis was not random for the screenwriter. One facet of the movie is that it's extending on the Catcher theme of all people being phony. Duh! Ebert acts like he's discovered something -- but that's what the script was TRYING to convey, Roger.

Also, I do not think Paul character was completely negative. I'm not sure what was going on with Ebert in this review (and the dialogue wasn't blase, lol). Glad Siskel liked it. I think it's rather brilliant. There was just one plot point I didn't like otherwise I thought it was very potent.

Sucks that the site is dead, hope all those hundreds of old reviews will be made accessible somewhere someday.
