I loved this film. A memorable comedic moment in the film was the whole over-the-top pink shirt monologue by one of the sons. It was so overacted but i got such a kick out of it. Does anyone have the exact lines? It was such a complete unexpected break from the flow of the story. thanks a lot... YOU GAVE AWAY MY PINK SHIRT? I LOVE THAT SHIRT! etc etc.
I just watched that scene. Overacting is right. Here's the dialog:
"I just want to get one thing straight: You gave him my pink shirt? You gave a complete stranger my pink shirt?! My collar had grown a full size from weight lifting. You saw that my arms had grown! You saw that my neck had grown and you bought me that shirt for my NEW BODY! I LOVED THAT SHIRT! MY FIRST SHIRT FOR MY NEW BODY AND YOU GAVE THAT SHIRT AWAY?! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU! I HATE THIS LIFE AND I HATE YOU!!"
Then the other bratty kids say a few things and he yells, "YOU GAVE HIM MY PINK SHIRT!"
It's not overacting. It's broad acting, but that's not the same thing. The whole point is that the kids are all so inclined to morose self-pity despite enormous privilege and wealth, that they have to manufacture reasons to be mad at their parents. And it's supposed to be comic. Try toning down the delivery and see if it's funny anymore.
His complaint is totally unreasonable because he's a spoiled brat (he's also described as having "barbells for brains") -- any attempt at delivering the lines in a reasoned and measured way not only defeats the comedy but also grossly undermines the characterization because he's not reasoned or measured, as evidenced by the lines themselves.
I wish people would stop complaining about 'overacting' in this movie. It's an imprecise use of the term.
Oh yes, and the one concerned about Ouisa's saying drugs and looking at him is another character. He's the son of the doctor, whereas the pink-shirt diatribe is her own son.
wow, um...i wasn't criticizing the actor or the acting. It was a very funny and intentionally over the top scene. I probably incorrectly used the word "overacted" though. Didn't mean to offend anyone out there.
i didn't think the kids actually spoke that way to their parents. i thought that the reason they were shown to be such jerks and speaking so rudely to their parents was because the parents were RECOUNTING their conversation with their children to their society friends. and therefore they would be exaggerating their children's reactions and behavior for effect and for their audience's enjoyment. we were only seeing the parents' point of view of the confrontations with their kids. as the doctor repeatedly said, "there are two sides to every story," or something to that effect.
Yeah, good point. i wonder if it was done that in the play? I personally just thing these people have pain in the ass bratty kids, but, in any case, it's a hilarious moment.
Just saw this movie for the first time tonight, really enjoyed it. Now I keep thinking of the idea of six degrees of separation. There were many great scenes in this film. I liked the whole pink shirt dialogue lol. I also loved when they got the pot of jam and they all freaked for a little bit haha. This movie was different and yet very thought provoking. Loved it....def one of my favorites now.
