The concept of six degrees od separation is not difficult to comprehend. However, I fail to see how this particular story has any relevance to the concept. I find it an interesting story in its own right, but totally independent of the concept implied by its title and mentioned once during the story.
sharethe movie is all about the connections between people, and how at once we are all extremely connected and extremely alienated. note the structure of the movie, how there are stories within stories within stories--we discover in someway what we believe to be the present, to be reality, is actually part of a story being told and gossiped to others--right there is the connection, the transferral of information. without this crucial process--the mundane reproduction of events and stories--none of the characters would ever have realized they had been conned. the more people they spoke to, the more flan and ouisa found out about will...and at the end, the fact that they do not even know his name when he is arrested is enough to argue that they are limited in their connections, that because of their alienation they will never find will again...
sorry i have seen this movie many many times and to say it is not about six degrees of separation almost offends me.
I'm sorry but I AM confused by the six degrees of separation concept, and I need someone to explain it to me. Is it like Barrack Obama being distantly related to Dick Cheney? Is it that we are all connected to each other? What is meant by the word "degree?" I just saw the film. While it is obviously well done, is there a broader message other than a gay con man and the female lead connecting on a certain level? And it is not a good ending if Paul hanged himself in prison.
shareYes, as it is set up to be a central theme of the movie this concept isn't explained...at all? Apparently you can just pick someone who, in any way at all, is connected to you (you were both in the same train car this one time? you both speak the same language?) and then move on from there.
shareIt doesn't really work for me, either, not in the way they explain the concept in the movie. Paul uses information he gets from one person about other people and pretends to know people they know.
