The last time I read this book was at secondary school from what I gathered her parents died from a tropical disease but in the film adaptation they were killed by an natural disater, a earthquake.

Also, Medlock was made out to be worse than she actually was in the film. And Mary wasn't as much of a cow in the film (beginning).

Just an fyi- Cholera is not a tropical disease- it happens due to drinking unclean water and can happen anywhere. Often happening in over-crowded areas like New York at the turn of the century when it was flooded with immigrants. or in Haiti currently where most of the population is still living in tents.
