I absolutely adored Maggie Smith in this film. I think she played Mrs. Medlock admirably. She's so firm and strict that she pulls of the persona of the elderly, Scottish housekeeper perfectly.

I believe this movie was my first introduction to Maggie Smith, and for a few years after that, she was the standard for mean adults. I've grown to love Maggie Smith in other roles, but that first impression, of her as Mrs. Medlock, will stay with me forever.

Thankfully, she wasn't as bad as Miss Minchin from A Little Princess.

I loved Maggie Smith here. She's great in Gosford Park as well.

All along I thought it was Susan Sarandon!

I think Mrs Medlock was a good character for her to play. She couldn't play that type of role in her usual haughty manner. A very enjoyable performance.
