I haven't seen this film in years, so there's bits I don't remember too clearly, but also parts that have stuck in my head. But I just remember it having a really weird feel to it, especially the first half, as well as the story seeming quite weird, that's not a bad thing just something I thought, does anyone else think this?
The movie has a distinctive mood, rather Gothic, which is unusual if one considers that the film is typically filed in the children's section (that's where I found it).
When you think about it not much happens, technically, in the first third or so of the movie, and yet it is somehow gripping, with its atmosphere, and the sense of secrets and strange things. The director and production staff definitely handled this movie well. And of course the girl playing Mary is fantastic--so much hinges on this actor and she carries it off so well.
It is not the usual 'children's fare, and it's all the better for it.
I usually like a tightly written story. But, even though there's not a lot happening in this movie, I was content with the eerie atmosphere of this one.
