Wasn't there a scene where... ?

I just saw this movie again for the first time in over 15 years and I remembered it kind of differently. I always thought there was a scene where the father returns and it was revealed that Medlock had purposely kept the boy inside, knowing that he was actually well all along. Something about doing it to keep her job - in other words, if the boy was well and he and his father were off travelling etc. she might not be needed? I remember a confrontation between the father and Mrs. Medlock at the very end. Am I thinking of a different movie?

I also remember a scene with a doctor coming to visit the house at one point, and I think he recommended against the boy going outside.

I saw a stage version of The Secret Garden at a local theater when I was a kid, and that had the same subplot you describe. Medlock and the doctor were definitely portrayed as villains. I've never seen any other movie version of this, but perhaps the 1987 has that plotline?

There are multiple films of this story, you could be remembering an older version. In the musical, Lord Craven's brother, Dr. Craven, is scheming to control and eventually inherit Mistlethwait Manor. So he purposely keeps Lord Craven and Colin apart, telling the Lord and all the staff that his son his ill. While this makes the story more understandable to modern audiences that need a villain, it waters down the motif of death and rebirth.
