How come they never thought
Over time, how come the kids didn't try to save up when they could and buy a handful of balls when they could instead of always just playing with one ball at a time? how much was a dollar worth in the 60's?

They must have been rich.. If Smalls can hit a home run, imagine how many balls get lost when the others bat.
They were able to scrape up enough money to buy a ball in one day. Even 8 bucks is not much money if you split it 8/9 ways.
