DVD ???

This wonderful movie deserves more attention. Why has it never been released on DVD??
P.S. Does anybody know if it was released on DVD outside the U.S. ?

UPDATE
As noted below in the thread, Alliance released this in Canada in 2008.

It definitely needs to be released on DVD. One of the best coming-of-age movies I've seen, it packs a wallop. Ashley's debut is simply stunning, unfortunately her later roles have rarely been as good as this one, but nevertheless, she's a terrific actress.

I got so tired of waiting for the DVD that I just took my faded VHS copy and recorded that onto DVD. Video quality sucks, of course, but at least it's a temporary stopgap until this wonderful film finally makes it on DVD. I can't imagine what the delay is. After all, Ashley Judd is a popular actress, and this is probably her best film, too!

I have seen this available on DVD thru Amazon about a year ago or so outside of the US (France maybe? - I don't remember). However, it was indicated that it would not play on American DVD players - only Eurpean ones. And, I believe it was only the movie, no extras.

This is my favorite movie of all time, so far. I've checked to see if this movie was released on DVD about every 3 months or so for the last few years. I only own it on VHS (bought it brand new for $9.99 a few years back - I can't believe how expensive it is brand new now on Amazon). Anyways, Victor Nunez, if you ever read this blog, please, release this on DVD - and for all the fans that have been waiting for this - make it a double (or triple!) DVD with a lot of extras (commentaries, deleted scenes, interviews, your thoughts on the movie, etc. It really is an amazing movie.

It was released on DVD in Spain. You can order it online at pretty much any retailer in Spain. Region 2 PAL. Make sure that the audio track is in English (as opposed to dubbed into Spanish; though, to be fair, all of the ones I have seen have had both the dubbed and original soundtrack). Costs about 11 or 12 euros (maybe 15 or 16 dollars) plus shipping.

I have the DVD from Spain. The picture quality is outstanding, but there are no extras at all. It is widescreen with English soundtrack. You can probably find it on eBay, as I did. Just make sure your player can play region 2 PAL DVDs first!

Found the same DVD also on eBay!

It's an absolute crime this is not available on DVD. How about it, Ashley? Throw around some of that Hollywood weight you have and get it done! Or maybe Todd Field could spearhead a campaign? I doubt Victor Nunez can get it done. Sadly, his brilliant "Coastlines" was kept out of theaters for years -- and then only saw the light of day on IFC and at a couple of theaters this year. Did you guys see it? I thought it was terrific -- one of my favorite movies of the year.

My friend and I are huge fans of Ashley and he kept mentioning this movie and I finally bought a copy from Amazon last year. It was sold by an independent seller and the postage might not be as expensive for you if you live in the U.S. but it was around $14 for me (to Australia) and the movie was US$26.99 but I think it's about $3 for postage if you live in the States. It's region 2 DVD, but you should be able to play it on your DVD player, as almost all DVD players now play disks from all regions.

Wait, I just checked Amazon and it's $28.98 plus $2.98 for postage, so $31.96 in total, which might be a bit much for just one DVD, but that's how much new-movie DVDs are (well, that's how I justified paying so much! I paid around $43).

I got this info last year about the DVD release of the movie from Hank Sartin, Time Out Chicago film editor and critic:

Often, when a film that's respected and well-reviewed doesn't get a release, it means either the companies with the rights doesn't believe there's any money to be made, or there is a problem over who owns the rights (a lot of small or foreign films had complex contracts for video release rights, and disputes often spring up over who has the rights to the US release. For instance, Ruby in Paradise has come out on DVD in Spain...). Ruby was released by October Films, a company that got bought and resold about four times in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I believe the rights to their catalog of films are now held by Focus Features, but I'm not certain, because the rights to catalogs are sometimes sold off in these intricate deals.

I recently read that Paramount owns the video release rights. It's a shame that it's still not available.

Alliance released the film on DVD back in 2008.

I just bought this DVD at Amazon Canada, http://www.amazon.ca , and they still have more as of this date. It is a region 1 (US and Canada) and has no sub-titles so I missed some of the dialog.

I have a DVD copy of this film and I either got it at Amazon or rented it from Netflix a long time ago I don't remember. I see it's no longer available on Netflix at this time and I've noticed this with other films I rented years back. I asked Netflix what's happened to them and their excuse is they are only allocated so many from the distributors and in the case of low demand films they don't get many. Then, they claim, they run out because of people not returning them, lost in the mail, or damaged.

I believe the DVD came from a Canadian producer. I must have given the original to my daughter as I can't find it but I do have the byte by byte copy if anyone's interested. Might be able to work something out very cheaply to a good cause. :) Just message me privately.

Edit: I did find "used" DVD releases on Amazon Canada. Go here:
