Yeah, Rochelle is cool. Also, Ruby's neighbor, another young woman like Ruby, is an amazing character played perfectly. She's got a line that always stayed w/ me: "It's amazing how much you grow in a couple of months." So earnest yet ironic it seemed to me because, imo, she seemed to be rather lost. Earnest and beautiful, but lost.
There are so many great lines in this movie, but my favorite is probably the one Ruby says in voiceover after a scene where her and Mike have an argument. The argument ends with Mike apologizing and them coming to an understanding. After the argument they have a sweet, pretty long embrace, they put their arms around one another and walk into the night away from the camera. It's a very poignant, romantic moment, and a lesser writer or director would use the moment to allow us more time for them to be together. But Nunez goes straight to the heart: an acknowledgement that that argument, though ended without malice, was the beginning of the end of their relationship. Over the two of them walking away tenderly into the night, Ruby says in voiceover, "That's when I started seeing less of Mike." I've seen a lot of movies, and that's one of the most realistic, "truest" lines I can remember. I bet it was hard to write...
"Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."
