I am not a sports genius but.......
I know this is just a movie but can you really throw back the ball in a homerun as stated in the bleachers rules?? I just never heard of it, thats all. Is that just made-up rules?

sharethat is a real Cubs tradition
shareIsn't that cheating or just for fun like the 7th inning stretch??
shareJust for fun. Actually before today's game some of the Houston outfielders were throwing a ball around and they threw it into the bleachers and the fans threw it back. I thought that was funny.

response to kipratner: i was actually at the game against the K.C. Royals. i believe that their was 4 people that ran on the field that nite.so that makes 3 sox fans and 1 cubs fan. and if you want to go back to the previous seanson, once again against K.C.,the family duo of sox fans jumped there 1st base coach. what a great fan base.at least there in the news for winning these days not jumping on the field.

It has been a while, since I have watched the movie, but did Henry say "bleacher's rules, you can't keep a home run ball hit by either team". I suppose I should watch it soon, but I think that is what a true Cubs fan, by throwing back a ball that was hit by a player on the oppioste team, in the event they caught the ball. Now in really life, I don't know, maybe they can chose to keep the balls that get hit by a hoemrun if they catch it, or now somebody could keep a ball. But I don't think I remember any of Henry or his freinds catching the ball.
shareIt's not a "rule", more a tradition. If the visiting team hits a home run, the fan who catches it is supposed to throw the ball back. This is done in an effort to keep the home run from happening again. All about superstition.
shareWell if I caught one by the opposing team there I'd sure as hell keep it. No matter what the surrounding fans did. Maybe it's time for them to ease up on the superstition a bit. Maybe that's why the Cubs have been losing. Just an opinion. I AM a Cubs fan btw, favorite team in the NL.
This is my signature, nice eh?

what the original poster meant by "isn't it cheating?" is if the catcher could actually tag the runner out if someone threw it that far. the answer is no, it doesn't matter. that's just in the movie to be funny. when we throw the ball back at wrigley, even if you could get it all the way to home before the runner gets there, he hit it out of the park. it's a homerun. he can't be tagged out just because the ball was throw back onto the playing field. hope this clears it up.

anyone who catches a homerun ball from an opposing team always switches the ball with the one that they brought with. take a look at the ball when the tv cuts back to the ball being thrown back on the field. it is dirty as hell. i have done that a few times. there is no way in hell i'm throwing back a homerun ball. just be prepared. bring an extra ball with yah.
GO CUBBIES
yes, i'm well aware that happens a lot. but not all the time. if it's just a meaningless homerun and it's a true cubs fan, we don't care. if it's some memorable moment or record thing, then sure, that's understandable.

Throwing back the ball is a tradition at Wrigley Field. At most other stadiums, you get kicked out of the stadium if you throw the ball back.
